BOSTON - A strong defensive effort by the Boston University women's basketball team wasn't enough to stop Vermont as the Terriers dropped a 60-48 decision in their final non-conference game of the season on Monday afternoon in Case Gym.

BU (0-11) looks toward a fresh start as the team heads into conference play on Wednesday afternoon against Holy Cross in Case Gym.

Troi Melton and Courtney Latham co-led the Terriers with 11 points each. The Catamounts were led by Andreana Thomas, who totaled a career-high 26 points, the only Vermont player in double-digit scoring.

Corrine Williams tallied a career-best six steals on the day to help BU force 22 Catamount turnovers, the most by an opponent so far this season. Williams is the first Terrier to record five or more steals in a game since this day last year when Courtney Latham had five against UMass (Dec. 28, 2014). She doubled her previous personal best of three steals, which she recorded last season against Lafayette.

Kara Sheftic did an outstanding job at drawing Catamount fouls as she got 12 chances (7-for-12) from the charity stripe, the most a single player has had in a game since Mo Moran went 8-of-12 from the free-throw line at Albany on Jan. 16, 2012. Sheftic finished with a near double-double, totaling nine points and eight rebounds.

The Terriers struggled from the floor, shooting 24.6 percent overall while Vermont hit 41.1 percent of their attempts from the field. BU was afforded a season-high 25 free throws and finished 15-of-25 from the charity stripe.

BU and UVM both struggled to score in the first period as each side put together strong defensive efforts. Early in the period, Vermont had three consecutive possessions that ended in a turnover, stopping a 5-1 run to start the game. The Catamounts had eight miscues throughout the first period but still managed to hold a slight lead by the end of the quarter, 9-8.

The second period started off slow for the Terriers, who did not add to their point total for the first 5:16 of the quarter. Vermont had consistent scoring throughout the period and steadily increased its lead to as much as 14 in the quarter. BU battled back towards the end of the quarter thanks to Sheftic free throws and a buzzer-beating layup by Latham to make it a 10-point deficit heading into halftime.

Despite a nine-point quarter by Melton, the Terriers could not contain the Catamounts, who found their largest lead of the contest midway through the period, giving BU a deficit of 20 points, which would ultimately be too much for the Terriers to overcome.

Down 17 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Terriers went on a 8-0 run to start the period to get the deficit down to single digits with six minutes left to play. Vermont found its stride once again, however, and quickly made up for the BU run to finish the game with a 60-45 victory.
