BOSTON - Sophomore Eric Fanning hit a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining and blocked Navy's game-tying attempt to help the Boston University men's basketball team claim a 62-59 victory on Wednesday night at Agganis Arena. Earning their first sweep of the season in conference action, the Terriers improve to 9-13 (5-6 PL), while the Midshipmen fall to 8-15 (4-7).
Worth Smith gave Navy its final lead (59-58) at 1:25 with a steal and layup but turned the ball over on his next possession after Fanning went 1-of-2 at the line. Fanning made the Midshipmen pay as he rolled around a screen and drained his lone attempt of the contest from behind the arc.
The Terriers shot 63.6 percent in the second half to finish 22-of-44 (.500), including 7-of-19 (.368) from 3-point range. Fanning reached 20 points for the third straight contest, while classmate Cedric Hankerson had 13 points with five assists. Junior Justin Alston claimed his first career double-double on 10 points and 11 rebounds to help BU win the battle at the boards, 29-25.
Limited to 19 points in the first half, Navy more than doubled its scoring output in the second half behind 55.6 percent shooting performance. Zach Fong drained four of his five 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes to lead the Midshipmen with 15 points. Smith contributed 14 points with five rebounds, two blocks and two steals to help the Midshipmen outscore BU in points off turnovers, 24-11.
Fong's first trey gave Navy its largest lead (5-0) at 17:00, and Kendall Knorr's 3-pointer pushed the Midshipmen ahead, 10-8, at 12:08 for the final time in the first half. Junior Nathan Dieudonne tied the contest with a pair of free throws, and Fanning reeled off seven straight points to give the Terriers the 17-10 advantage with 7:24 remaining.
Alston kept the lead at seven off a quick feed from junior John Papale at 49 seconds, but Tilman Dunbar ended the half with a steal and layup to cut the deficit to five (24-19) entering the locker room.
Dieudonne and freshman Cheddi Mosely both found Alston early in the second half for easy layups to give the Terriers a 30-20 lead at 18:20. Trailing, 39-31, at 15:51 following a Hankerson free throw, Navy responded with a 13-1 run capped by Shawn Anderson's two free throws at 12:19 to pull ahead, 44-40.
The Midshipmen could not extend the lead any further though, as Fanning hit back-to-back free throws to put the score at 49-49 with 8:05 left in regulation. Fanning tied the game for the fifth and final time seven minutes later with a free throw before hitting the Terriers' seventh 3-pointer for the victory at 6.2 seconds.
BU finished the contest 11-of-17 (.647) at the charity stripe and outscored Navy in the paint, 28-16, to improve to 6-0 all-time in the series.
The Terriers will next travel to Lafayette on Monday (Feb. 9) for a 7 p.m. tip-off on the CBS Sports Network.
