Redwood City, Calif. - After a long winter, the Boston University men's rowing team will open its Spring season this weekend when it travels to Redwood City, Calif. to take on Stanford and California. The No. 8 ranked Terriers will face No. 12 Stanford on Friday evening at 8 p.m. EST before taking on No. 2 California on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. EST.
The Terriers hope to build on their fall season which was highlighted by an 8th place overall finish (4th among colleges) at the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta. After an extended winter of indoor training, the Terriers are looking forward to getting back on the water.
"This weekend is a great opportunity for us to get some early racing in against some of the top programs in the country," said head men's rowing coach Tom Bohrer. "We see Cal and Stanford later in the year at the IRAs but for us to get another race in against some really good competition will only make us better."
After this weekend's competition, the Terriers will have no time to rest as they return home and jump right into the cup series portion of their schedule. The fun begins on April 11th when BU takes on arch rival Northeaster for the coveted Arlett Cup.
"These cup races are against programs we have been rowing against for 40-50 years," said Bohrer. "We'll open up against Northeastern and that is always a big race for us. There is a lot of history between the two programs.
After facing Northeastern, BU will take on longtime foes Dartmouth, Syracuse and Columbia at home in cup races before traveling to Wisconsin to face the Badgers in the final race of the year before the Eastern Sprints on May 17th. The Terries then conclude the season at the IRA National Championship Regatta beginning May 29th.
This year the Terriers will look to improve on last season's impressive performance at the IRAs when the team finished 6th overall in team points and took home the IRA Chapman Award given annually to the team with the largest increase in points over the previous year.
"This is the prime time of the year for rowing," added Bohrer. "For the amount of time and training we put in all year, now it comes down to each weekend and rowing in races. This is what we live for."
Both of this weekend's races against Stanford and Cal will be carried live on BU's Terrier Sports Radio Network (www.goTerriers.com/tsrn) or can be heard by simply dialing (712) 432-4448 on your phone to listen to a live call of the race. Coverage begins at 7:40 p.m. EST on Friday and 12:40 p.m. EST on Saturday.
