The Boston University women's rowing team will compete in the Patriot League Championship on Friday, May 15, with a trip to the NCAA Championships on the line. Racing is set to begin at 8 a.m. on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
The Terriers will be trying for their third-straight conference crown and with it, an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. BU won the CAA title back in 2013 and took home the Patriot League crown in 2014.
"This is the race we have been preparing months for. This is the gateway to the NCAAs," said director of women's rowing Stacey Rippetoe. "We have gained a lot of speed in the last two weeks since Eastern Sprints so I am really excited to see the team race and see what we can do."
Three boats from BU will compete on Friday, the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the varsity four. The competition begins at 8 a.m. with V8 heat races when BU's top boat takes on Loyola, Navy, Georgetown and Lehigh.
The top three finishers in each heat, regardless of time, will move on to the Grand Final with the remaining squads participating in a Petite Final.
The competition will be scored on a weighted scale, with nine points going to the winner of the varsity four race, 18 points for the winner of the second varsity eight race and 27 for the varsity eight winner. The PL Championship will be awarded to the school that accumulates the most points in all three races. If there is a tie, the higher-place finisher of the V8 race is crowned PL Champion.
Last year, in Worcester, Mass. the Terriers trailed Navy 27 to 22 heading into the final V8 race and won with a time of 7:14.58 to earn 27 points. Navy finished fourth in 7:21.84 and earned just 18 team points. The nine-point swing gave Boston University the win, 49-45.
"We feel confident in what we can do," added Rippetoe. "Similar to other races, we are looking for the boats to be brave and have fun going really fast."
