Baraboo, Wisconsin - The Boston University men's rowing team swept Wisconsin on Saturday, winning the Jablonic Cup to finish off an impressive undefeated cup racing season. Saturday was the Terriers' third-straight Jablonic Cup victory and fifth-straight cup victory this spring.
In the first race of the day, the No. 6 varsity eight boat, coxed by senior Lauren Harvey and stroked by junior Vass Ragoussis, had a strong start and pulled ahead of the No. 15 Badgers in the first 500 meters. Racing into a significant headwind that continued throughout the morning on Devil's Lake, the Terriers extended their lead to open water and cruised to victory with a time of 6:18.71, more than 5 seconds ahead of the Badgers (6:23.81).
"I though all of our boats showed poise today," said men's head rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "The strong headwind made for diffucult conditions in the 1st 1000M for both programs. In the 1V we were able to push our bowball ahead at the 500M mark. We worked on some tactical moves during the week for the 2nd 500M that we were able to execute and that was good to see. When the water flattend out in the last 1000M we were able to extend the lead."
"Winning the Jablonic Cup is a big deal for us. We have tremendous amount respect for Coach Clark and his team. Wisconsin has a strong history of success and we like to be in their company."
With the victory, the V8 capped an undefeated duel cup season, finishing with an overall record of 6-1 with their only defeat coming against No. 1 California in Redwood City, Calif. on April 4th.
The V8 has now defeated Stanford, Northeastern (Arlett Cup), Dartmouth & Rutgers (Bill Cup), Columbia (Lusins Cup), Syracuse (Conlan Cup) and Wisconsin (Jablonic Cup) this Spring.
The second varsity eight boat boat raced next, looking to continue BU's winning ways. Coxed by freshman MacKenzie Hart and stroked by senior Gregor Dierks, the 2V opened a three seat lead on the Badgers in the first 500 meters and extended it over the next 1,500 meters. The lead was again open water at the finish, with the Terriers coming in at 6:28.11 and the Badgers 6 seconds back (6:34.60).
With the V8 and 2V8 victories, BU's 3V boat took to the water looking for an impressive fifth-consecutive sweep this season. Showing the team's depth, the 3V delivered. Coxed by freshman Justin Goucher and stroked by freshman Max Ponsen, the Terriers had their closest race of the day but still were able to pull away, finishing with a time of 6:24.98, well ahead of the Wisconsin 3V (6:28.67) and freshman eight (06:34.82).
"As with the 1V, both the 2V and 3V were able to get a slight lead at 500M mark," added Bohrer "The 2V was able to push away from Wisconsin in the last 1000M. The 3V had several lead changes with Wisconsin and was finally able to open it up in the last 500M. A solid performance in both boats"
Later in the afternoon, as part of their preparation for the Eastern Sprints, BU took on Georgetown in a varsity eight race. The Terriers lead early and opened it throughout the course, winning with a time of 6:21.17, well ahead of the Hoyas (6:42.75).
"I am proud of how the team raced today," said Bohrer. "We need to stay focused the next 2 weeks leading up to Eastern Sprints as we still need to find a few seconds of speed".
The Terriers will now begin preparations for the Eastern Sprints on May 17 in Worcester, Mass.
