July 22, 2015 | Men's Rowing
PLOVDIV, Bulgaria - Rising senior Mackenzie Copp of the Boston University men’s rowing team will compete in the 2015 World Rowing Under 23 Championships taking place July 22-26 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The London, Ontario, native will row in the men’s four competition for Team Canada on Thursday.
“I am really excited to represent my country. It is obviously a huge honor,” said Copp. “I can’t wait for the racing to begin.”
Copp was a member of BU’s varsity eight boat that had a very successful spring season. The V8 went undefeated in cup racing, defeating crews from Northeastern, Wisconsin, Columbia, Syracuse, and Dartmouth. The V8 was ranked as high as sixth nationally during the season and placed seventh in the country at the IRA National Championship Regatta.
“We are extremely proud that Mac will be representing his home country of Canada at the U23 World Championships,” said head men’s rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. “Mac was part of our varsity eight boat last year. He has a tremendous work ethic and over the past 3 years has not only turned into an outstanding collegiate rower but now has made the next step to the international stage. We are thrilled that he will be rowing for team Canada and wish his team the best of luck.”
Following an intensive selection process, Copp was one of 24 Canadian rowers selected by Rowing Canada Aviron in June for a U23 National Team roster spot. Copp will try and help Canada best its 2014 medal count of one gold and two bronze.
The 2015 World Rowing Under 23 Championships is a five-day competition featuring 20 rowing events. This year’s competition, coming in a pre-Olympic year, will feature a large turnout of 820 of the best under-23 rowers in the world representing 51 nations.
The competition will take place on the Plovdiv Regatta Course, which many consider to be the fastest course in the world.
In addition to this week’s U23s, two former Terriers will be competing in international competition later this summer. Matt Lenhart (’14) and Will Daly (’06) will compete for the United States at the World Championships in Aiguebelette, France, beginning Aug. 30th. Lenhart will be stroking the U.S. lightweight 8+ and is currently training on the Charles River for his first competition on the world stage. Daly continues his bid for his second Olympic team as he will race in the lightweight 4- at the Worlds.
Also, former Terrier co-captain Kyle Peabody ('14) recently represented the U.S. at the Pan American games in Toronto where he won bronze with the US 8+ boat.
