The Boston University men's and women's openweight and lightweight rowing teams will compete at the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) on Saturday and Sunday. The three teams will send out 12 boats combined to compete in the two-day competition.
The Head of the Charles is the largest two-day regatta in the world, with more than 11,000 athletes rowing in over 1,900 boats in 61 events. The event will run 3 miles along the Charles River with the official start line once again being Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse. The competition attracts tens of thousands of spectators to the banks of the Charles River each year.
"Our team is very excited about racing in the Head of the Charles," said men's rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer. "The energy level is always extremely high as the largest rowing regatta in the world comes to Boston and begins at DeWolfe Boathouse. We've had a productive fall training period which was primarily spent working in our new freshman and transfer students into our system. Boats are moving well and we look forward to the weekend."
The men's team will send out five boats to compete over the weekend. The men's varsity eight and second varsity eight boats will race in Sunday's championship eights race beginning at 2:20 p.m. The V8 boat will look to build on last year's strong performance when it finished fifth behind only perennial powers Yale, Cal, Harvard and Washington.
The men's third varsity eight (3V) will race in the club eights on Saturday at 1:37 pm. The 3V, which took fifth in the club eight races at last year's HOC, will be looking to medal in the event this year against a field of 40 boats. The men's team will also send out its fourth varsity to compete in the club eights on Saturday as well as a varsity four boat to compete in the club four race which is scheduled to begin at 12:51 p.m.
On the women's side, the Terriers will send out 3 openweight boats starting with the club four boat at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday. Last year, the women's club four finished an impressive fifth, ahead of 47 other boats, in the large field of 52. The women's club eight will race at 1:51 p.m., looking to improve on last year's 18th place finish. The BU women's varsity eight boat will compete in the championship eight race on Sunday beginning at 2:36 p.m.
"In front of DeWolfe Boathouse this weekend, thousands of competitors will cross the starting line of the Head of the Charles course," said director of women's rowing Stacey Rippetoe. "We're proud to be among the crews pushing for our best performance over those 3 miles. Our team's primary goal is for all of our crews to come through with great performances. We've made the most out of our daily routine over the past 5 weeks and we know each one of us will need to be sharp in order be great come race day."
The women's lightweight rowing team, competing in their fourth Head of the Charles as a program, will look to improve on its impressive third-place finish (2nd among lightweight collegians) in last year's women's lightweight eight race. The lightweights will sent out 4 boats this year with an A & B boat in both the lightweight 4 race (2:02 p.m.) and the lightweight 8 race (2:36 p.m.). The lightweights finished 4th among the lightweight fours in 2015.
Also, several alumni boats will be racing for BU including a women's alumni 8 boat with assistant coach Lynn Ratte ('14) racing at 12:31 p.m.
In addition to the competition, Boston University women's rowing (women's openweight and women's lightweight) will be hosting an Open House on Saturday for prospects and their families during the Head of the Charles weekend. Attendees will be able to meet with coaching staff, team-members and tour the facility. Open House hours are Saturday (Oct. 22) between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. To RSVP for the women's rowing open house contact wcrew@bu.edu
