WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston University women's basketball team opens its conference schedule on Friday afternoon when the Terriers travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Terriers (2-9) are coming off a thrilling, 64-60 come-from-behind victory over UMass on Dec. 14th at Case Gym. BU was led by seniors Sarah Hope and Meghan Green, who each scored 16 points vs. the Minutewomen. Trailing by as many as six points in the fourth quarter and 11 in the first half, the Terriers went on a 9-2 run to close out the game and claim their second win of the season in dramatic fashion. The final quarter had five lead changes, but BU pulled ahead thanks to 8-of-13 shooting (61.5%) in the fourth and outscored UMass, 23-13. Junior Sophie Beaudry matched a career high with six blocks in the Terriers' win.
Though 11 games, senior guard Sarah Hope leads the Terriers in scoring, averaging 11.5 ppg., which ranks 11th in the conference. Hope is one 3-pointer away from her 200th career trey. She needs just nine more to move into a tie for third with Kristi Dini ('09), who graduated having made 208 3-pointers. The school record is held by Chantell Alford ('13); Alford sank 244 3-pointers during her illustrious career. Hope is within reach of second place, held by Alex Young ('12) at 218.
Holy Cross also enters Friday's contest with a 2-9 record after two straight losses, including a 63-33 loss at Arizona State on Dec. 21. The Crusaders have gone 2-3 against opponents BU has played this year, with both teams having defeated UMass Lowell while BU has also bested UMass. Holy Cross edged Marist for its other win against a common opponent. Two Crusaders average double figures in scoring, led by Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (13.8 ppg). Lauren Manis is next with 11.4 ppg. Manis also leads the Crusaders with an average of 8.3 rebounds per game. Madalyn Smith is Holy Cross' top assist provider at 2.63 per game.
The last time the two teams met, Holy Cross defeated BU, 74-50, on Feb. 27, 2016 at the Hart Center.
Friday's contest will also mark the first winter matchup between the two schools in the Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition. The Terriers are the reigning champions after posting a winning score of 20-4 last year. BU is currently ahead, 4-1, following the completion of the fall schedule with wins in men's cross country, field hockey, men's soccer and women's soccer. In the summer of 2015, BU and Holy Cross announced the creation of the all-sports Turnpike Trophy competition with a point being awarded to the victor in each sporting event.
After Friday's contest in Worcester, BU will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh on Mon., Jan. 2nd at 2 p.m.
