Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
A dominant second half solidified by a 14-save performance from Caroline Meegan gave the Boston University women's lacrosse team (2-3, 1-0 PL) a 14-4 win at American (3-5, 0-1 PL) on Tuesday afternoon in the Patriot League opener.
The Terriers were led by Meegan's outstanding performance in net, which included four saves on free position shots to keep the Eagles 0-for-6 from the 8-meter line. Meegan returned to the field for the first time since the season opener after recovering from injury.
Jill Horka also had an impressive day, corralling eight draw controls and scoring twice to help the Terriers to victory.
BU outshot the Eagles, 37-23 and went 5-for-7 on free positions. The Terriers dominated on draw controls, winning 16 of 19 on the day.
Mickenzie Larivee led BU with three goals while Sarah Andersen and Jenny Thompson each went 2-for-2 on 8-meter shots. Kaitlin Belval also netted her first career goal against the Eagles.
BU had a slow start to the game and was held scoreless for the opening 20 minutes. In the meantime, the Eagles scored two goals to take a 2-0 advantage with 10 minutes left in the first half.
The Terriers responded to the deficit, however, and began an eight-goal run to get ahead of AU by halftime. Andersen started BU off by intercepting a pass off of one of the few lost draw controls of the game, and running it into the fan where she drew a foul and was awarded a free position, which she turned into the first goal of the day.
BU got the ball back thanks to a crease violation and the Terriers were quick to turn it into the game-tying goal as Taylor Hardison found Larivee from behind the net to make it a 2-2 game with nearly six minutes left in the first half.
Remy Nolan, Belval and Horka used the final two minutes of the game to take a 5-2 halftime lead, which it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
BU started the second half the way it finished the first, scoring three goals in the first eight minutes thanks to a pair of free positions and a goal by Horka on the opening possession to take an 8-2 lead.
American countered with two goals after of 20 minutes of scoreless play to cut into the lead but the Eagle momentum would be short lived, as AU scored its final goal of the game with 19 minutes left.
The Terriers went on to score six more goals over the final 17 minutes to take a 10 minute lead and earn a running clock for the last four minutes of the game.
BU continues its spring break trip on Friday at Johns Hopkins. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. against the Blue Jays on Homewood Field.
