Boston University men's rowing will look to win its fifth-straight cup race of the season this Saturday when they take on the Wisconsin Badgers for the Jablonic Cup on the Charles River. Racing is set to begin with the 3V race at 7:24 a.m. and will conclude at 8:12 a.m. when the varsity eight races for the Jablonic Cup.
The No. 7 ranked Terriers will be seeking their fifth-straight cup win this spring and their fourth-straight Jablonic Cup victory dating back to 2013.
"We are excited to race this weekend against Wisconsin," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "Their program has a deep history of winning championships and we know there will be some hard racing."
The Jablonic Cup is named in honor of the longest serving coach in the history of the Wisconsin men's rowing program, Randy "Jabo" Jablonic, who was head coach of the Badgers from 1969 to 1997. He was also an oarsman at Wisconsin, graduating in 1960.
Last year, the Terriers 1V defeated Wisconsin on its way to sweeping the Badgers in three races to finish off an impressive undefeated cup racing season. Overall, Wisconsin has won 28 of the 34 races between the schools going back to 1948, with the Terriers victorious the last three times the teams have met.
This Saturday's competition will be the final home race of the year for BU and will mark the final competition at DeWolfe Boathouse for fourteen seniors, who will be honored after the race.
In addition, the Boston University men's rowing program will dedicate a new Empacher racing eight. A large group of alumni from 93-97 who raised the money for the boat will be on hand for the dedication.
Saturday will be the teams' final competition before heading to Worcester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints on May 15. The Terriers will then prepare for the IRA National Championship Regatta June 3-5.
To follow Saturday' racing action live, a radio broadcast of the event can be heard beginning at 7:05 a.m. by dialing (712) 432-4448 on your phone.
