Highlighted by a thrilling Jablonic Cup victory by the varsity eight boat, the Boston University men's rowing team swept Wisconsin Saturday morning on the Charles River to win their fifth-straight cup this spring.
In the last scheduled race of the day, the Wisconsin varsity eight boat came out fast and opened up a three-seat lead over BU's 1V in the first 100 meters. The Badgers continued to stretch their lead, pulling ahead by six seats at the 500 meter mark. The BU 1V, coxed by sophomore MacKenzie Hart and stroked by senior Mac Copp, could not cut into the lead as Wisconsin maintained its six-seat lead with 1000 meters to go. The Terriers finally began to make headway over the final 500 meters, cutting the Badgers' lead to 3 seats. The Terriers continued to charge hard towards the finish, catching Wisconsin with under 100 meters to go and pulling ahead at the line. BU finished with a time of 6:11.0 while Wisconsin came in at 6:12.2.
"It was certainly an exciting race," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "I thought we showed good poise and they never looked like they got rattled. We knew it would be a tough race and it turned out to be a real nail biter at the end. I am proud of how they rowed and they fought all the way to the end."
The second varsity eight race between BU and Wisconsin was not without its own excitement. The BU 2V, coxed senior Maggie Read and stroked by sophomore Max Ponsen, also fell behind early and staged a furious comeback. The BU and Wisconsin boats were bow to bow at the line but the race was finished under protest after it was ruled that the BU boat was forced to row in Wisconsin's wake.
The two boats agreed to race again, with the BU 2V joining Wisconsin's already scheduled race against MIT later in the morning. In the rematch, the Terriers pulled away early and opened a half length lead at the 1000 meter mark. The 2V was able to stretch the lead to a full length over the second half of the course and cruised to victory (6.07.3) ahead of Wisconsin (6:10.8).
In the first race of the day, the Terriers 3V got BU started off on the right foot, defeating Wisconsin's 3V by 3 seconds (6:13.9 to 6:16.9). The BU 4V also raced, finishing third (6:22.4) while the BU 5V finished fourth (6:36.4).
Saturday's racing marked the final competition at DeWolfe Boathouse for a large group of fourteen seniors who were honored by their coaches after the race.
"Today will be bitter sweet," said Bohrer about the class of 2016 on Sunday. "But it will also give us an opportunity to reflect on our senior's time here and what they meant to the coaching staff and their teammates."
The Boston University men's rowing program also dedicated a new Empacher racing eight on Sunday. A large group of alumni from 1993 to 1997 were on hand for the dedication ceremony as the boat was christened "Jungle Rules 1993-1997" in honor of their fundraising efforts.
The Terriers will now have a week off for finals before heading to Worcester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints on May 15. The Terriers will then prepare for the IRA National Championship Regatta June 3-5.
