The No. 9 Boston University men's varsity eight defeated rival No. 7 Northeastern on Saturday morning to win the Arlett Cup for the second-consecutive year. The Terriers defeated the Huskies by 4 seats in a battle that highlighted an exciting day of races between the archrivals.
The battle for the Arlett Cup was the last race of the morning, with the Northeastern V8 jumping out to a quick 2 seat lead at the start. The BU V8, coxed by sophomore MacKenzie Hart and stroked by classmate Max Ponsen, quickly responded, closing the gap as the two teams traded bow balls over the first 500 meters. BU began to pull ahead over the next 500 meter, opening up a 3 seat lead as the teams approached the Mass. Ave. bridge. The Terriers extended the lead to 5 seats entering the halfway point of the race. Despite Northeastern's best efforts down the stretch, they could not close the gap as the Terriers won the race by 4 seats with a time of 6:04 to Northeastern's 6:05.
"I think the 1V raced extremely hard," said Boston University's head coach Thomas Bohrer after the race. "They got into a rhythm and got a lead going into the 1000 meter mark. Northeastern really pushed us hard at the end and really made us earn that win. The guys were motivated. It is always a big race for us and Northeaster always races hard against us. Any day we can come away with that cup is a good day for our program."
Earlier in the morning, in the second varsity eight race, Northeastern came from behind to defeat BU. The Boston University 2V, coxed by Maggie Read and stroked by Drew Miller, lead by 5 seats at the halfway point but Northeastern made a move and pulled even with about 500 meters to go. The two boats battled over the last 500 meters but Northeastern pulled ahead, winning by half a length at the finish.
In fours racing earlier in the morning, the Terriers sent out 3 boats and all finished ahead of Northeastern. The Terriers 3V 4+ "A" finished with a time of 7:04, followed by the BU C (7:09) and the BU B (7:10). Northeastern finished fourth with a time of 7:11.
Next weekend the Terriers will travel to Hanover, N.H. to take on Dartmouth and Rutgers for the Bill Cup on April 16.
