The Boston University men's rowing team will compete at the 71st annual EARC Sprints Championships on Sunday, sending five boats to at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Terriers will look to build on last year's historic performance when they advanced all five boats to the grand finals, won a silver medal in the 2V grand final and a bronze medal in the 4V grand final.
The long day of racing begins with heat competitions at 8 a.m. and concludes with the varsity eight grand final at 5:30 p.m.
"We are very excited about racing at Eastern Sprints," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "We have spent the past 2 weeks finalizing line-ups, especially in our 1V and 2V to maximize our speed. We can't rely on the speed that we showed early in the season during the dual races. The top teams find ways to keep improving and we look to show that on Sunday."
BU's first race will be at 8:10 a.m. when the Terriers' No. 3 seeded fourth varsity eight boat races against No. 2 Yale, No. 6 Brown, No. 7 Navy and No. 10 George Washington with the top three boats advancing to the grand final.
At 9:00 a.m., BU's No. 4 seeded third varsity eight will face off against No. 3 Harvard, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 10 George Washington, No. 15 Rutgers and No. 16 Holy Cross with the top two boats moving on to the grand final.
BU's varsity eight boat is seeded 5th by the EARC and will race against No. 2 seeded Princeton, No. 8 Syracuse, No. 11 Penn, No. 14 George Washington and No. 17 Holy Cross in the 9:24 a.m. heat with the top 2 boats going to the grand final. The BU V8 is coming off an excellent duel-racing season after finishing with a 6-1 record and winning five straight cup races with their only defeat coming against Brown in March.
The Terriers' final heat of the morning will be when the No. 5 seeded 2nd varsity eight boat takes on No. 2 Princeton, No. 8 Penn, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 14 George Washington and No. 17 MIT starting at 10:24 a.m. with the top 2 boats advancing to the grand finals.
In the afternoon, BU will send out its fifth varsity eight boat to compete against Wisconsin, Princeton, Cornell, Harvard and Navy in the 5V grand final beginning at 1:12 p.m.
"This is the largest squad that we have had in a few years and Boston University will race in every heavyweight event on Sunday," added Bohrer. "This is a great opportunity to showcase the program. The team is well prepared and energized to race."
