Terriers Win Two Gold Medals at World Championships

World Rowing Championships
Boston University men's rowing was well represented at the 2016 U23 and Junior World Championships that concluded this week in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Eight current and former BU rowers competed in the international competition that took place from Aug. 21 to 28.
The championships were highlighted by gold medal performances by incoming freshman Nils Kocher ('20) racing for Germany in the junior men's eights, and a gold medal win for junior Max Ponsen racing for the Netherlands in the U23 men's heavyweight eights.
"I am very proud of all of our athletes that competed at the U23 and Junior World Championships," said men's head rowing coach Tom Bohrer, who traveled to Rotterdam to watch the competition in person. "The gold medal that Max Ponsen won in the U23 eight for Netherlands and the gold medal won by incoming freshman Nils Kocher in the German eight were certainly highlights for our program. Other than the Olympics, this is the highest level of international rowing competition that there is. Having eight Terriers race at this level, regardless of how they finished, is something to be proud of."
In addition to Kocher and Ponsen, other Terriers who competed included senior Spencer Haas and incoming sophomore Isaac Mocarski who raced for the United States. Recent graduate Mackenzie Copp ('16) and junior Jacob Barker represented Canada, while Senior Aleksandar Marinkovski and junior Uros Marinkovic competed for their native Serbia.
"All of our guys who raced in Rotterdam and are returning this fall gained valuable racing experience which will make our team faster this year."
The Terriers will open their fall season on Oct. 2 at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell, Mass.
