NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Hanako Kawasaki fired a four-under 67 in Sunday's final round to claim the individual title and lead the Boston University golf team to a victory at the Yale Intercollegiate.
The Terriers set a new 54-hole record with a three-day score of 890 (303-300-287), highlighted by a record score of 287 on Sunday. The score of 287 bested the single-day program record of 290 by three strokes, while the Terriers' total of 890 was six shots clear of their previous best of 896 set at the 2017 Harvard Invitational. BU finished five strokes ahead of Stirling, one of the top teams in Europe, and eight shots better than third-place Seton Hall.
This was the Terriers' first team title since winning the 2015 Patriot League Championship, while Kawasaki became the first BU individual to claim victory since Adela Cejnarova won the 2017 Patriot League title.
"We beat a good field today," head coach Bruce Chalas said. "I'm not surprised by our performance because we've been building momentum all fall and getting better with every tournament we've played."
Playing in just her third collegiate tournament, Kawasaki set several new program records this weekend. Her 67 bested the previous low round of 68 (-4) that Emily Tillo carded on March 7, 2016, while she matched Tillo's record for low score in relation to par. In addition, Kawasaki shattered the 54-hole record with a score of 211 (71-73-67), five shots clear of Cejnarova's 216 in October 2016.
Kawasaki made no bogeys on Sunday and made her move up the leaderboard thanks to three straight birdies on 14, 15 and 16. She finished the tournament at -2 for the weekend, one of just two players in the field to do so. Kawasaki was one stroke ahead of Kaitleen Shee of St. John's.
"Hanako has been better than advertised," Chalas said. "She's a really good player who is also extremely modest."
Junior Zhangcheng Guo also had an outstanding Sunday, carding a career-low 69 (-2) to move into a tie for fourth with a score of 216 (73-74-69), which matches the old 54-hole program record. Guo was simply sensational down the stretch on Sunday, as she birdied the final three holes and finished with five total on the afternoon. Guo and Kawasaki are the first two Terriers to record a score of 69 or lower in the same round.
Competing as an individual, junior Abby Parsons completed the best weekend of her collegiate career with a final-round 76 to finish tied for ninth with a career-low score of 222 (70-76-76). Senior Megan Carter carded a 73 on Sunday to move up 11 spots and tie for 44th with a total of 235 (83-79-73). Junior Annie Sritragul (82-74-82) and sophomore Katerina Doleckova (77-83-78) both tied for 49th at 238 while junior Saeros Oskarsdottir finished at 250 (81-87-82) as an individual.
"There's a lot of excitement around the team after today," Chalas said. "This will help give us reason and purpose for our training this winter. "We've got a great spring schedule coming up and we couldn't be more excited. We're making a lot of great progress and we're not done yet. Our eye is still on the ultimate prize, which is the Patriot League title.
