WORCESTER, Mass. – Highlighted by the varsity eight boat advancing to the grand finals, the Boston University women's openweight rowing team continued its spring season by competing at the 45th Annual Eastern Sprints on Sunday.

Racing against some of the top boats on the East Coast, the varsity eighth boat had a strong showing, finishing second in its heat race to advance to the grand finals and finishing sixth overall in a talented field of 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Varsity Eight

In the morning heat race, the BU V8, coxed by Erin Gannon and stroked by Shannon McGurty raced against Rutgers, Tennessee and Temple. Needing to finish in the top two to advance to the grand finals, the BU 1V took second with a time of 6:40.31, behind only race winner Rutgers (6:35.82) and ahead of third place Tennessee (6:43.53) and fourth place Temple (6:44.36). In the grand final later in the afternoon, BU took on Harvard, Dartmouth, Rutgers, Columbia and Northeastern and finished sixth with a time of 6:43.88.

Second Varsity Eight

The second varsity eight boat finished fourth in its morning heat race with a time of 7:12.24, behind race winner Dartmouth (6:47.21), Temple (6:49.08) and Tennessee (6:54.37) and moved on to the petite final. In the petite final, BU 2V, coxed Jessica Grossman and stroked by Sydney Blasetti, took on BC, Tennessee, Drexel, Conn., MIT and Holy Cross and finished fifth with a time of 7:16.99, ahead of MIT (7:24.26) and Holy Cross (7:47.96).

The 4+ "A" boat, coxed by Caitlyn Federico and stroked by Stephanie Gold, finished fifth in its morning heat race with a time of 8:14. 56, behind race winner Harvard (7:25.39), Drexel (7:29.61), Columbia (7:35.12) and Holy Cross (8:02.89) and moved on to the petite final. In the petite final, BU finished sixth with a time of 8:18.10, ahead of MIT (9:15.35).

The 4+ "B" boat, coxed by Julia White and stroked by Lara Guvelioglu finished fourth in its heat race with a time of 8:29.76, behind race winner Rutgers (7:40.62), Temple (7:52.65) and Columbia (7:59.73) and moved on to the petite final. In the petite final, the 4+ "B" finished second with a time of 8:44.25 behind Connecticut (8:18.31).
