BOSTON - More than 40 Boston University student-athletes participated in a "Spike Ball Tournament" at BU's Track and Tennis Center on Sunday to raise money for the Travis Roy Foundation. The event was organized by BU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in partnership with the Travis Roy Foundation, which is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with spinal cord injuries.
The event began at 12 p.m. with teams facing off against one another in a single eliminations Spike Ball tournament. The participating teams held an online fund-raising campaign leading up to the event with a fundraising goal of $2,500. Travis Roy attended the event, cheered on the teams and posed for photos with the participants.
"We had a great day raising money for the Travis Roy Foundation," said Boston University SAAC president and member of the women's swim & dive team Lizzie Tillo, who helped organize the event. "Travis himself stopped by and made a guest appearance and everyone was absolutely thrilled to see him. That fact that Travis was a BU student-athlete who has shown so much courage and determination in the face of adversity makes him a big inspiration to so many of us. It was our privilege to raise money his foundation."
Playing in his very first collegiate game for the Boston University men's ice hockey team in 1995, Travis Roy suffered a freak accident on the ice and cracked his fourth vertebra which left him paralyzed from the neck down. Roy gradually found the grit and the will to reclaim a fulfilling and productive life. Today, the Travis Roy Foundation raises money and awareness for other quadriplegics and paraplegics and supports research for a cure as Travis himself continues to inspire people who embrace his never-say-die spirit.
