Men's Basketball Welcomes Four Newcomers to Class of 2022
May 31, 2018 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON – Looking to improve upon last season's Patriot League semifinal appearance, the Boston University men's basketball team has welcomed four newcomers into the Class of 2022, head coach Joe Jones announced. Jack Hemphill hails from North Carolina, while Garrett Pascoe, Fletcher Tynen and Jordan Guest come to BU from California.
Ranked No. 11 in the state of North Carolina and No. 36 at the power forward position by ESPN.com, Jack Hemphill (Raleigh, N.C.) averaged 18 ppg and 12 rpg his senior year at Ravenscroft H.S. en route to All-State and Conference Player of the Year accolades. The 6-foot-9 forward was an invitee and participant in the NBAPA Top-100 Camp and a member of the CP3 AAU program. The opportunities led him to earn All-Tournament honors at both the 2016 John Wall Holiday Invitational and the 2017 South Granville Holiday Tournament. He is quite familiar with the Patriot League as his older brother, James, played for Navy from 2013-17.
"Jack provides us with good size and length and has the ability to play multiple positions," said Jones. "His perimeter skills and footwork will be an asset to our style of play along with his array of post moves. He is very good in ball screen action because of his high IQ and versatility."
Like Hemphill, Garrett Pascoe (Concord, Calif.) is also familiar with the Patriot League through his older sister, Hailey, who is a rising senior guard and former All-Rookie Team honoree on the Lehigh women's basketball team. A 6-foot-3 guard, Pascoe was a three-time team captain at Clayton Valley Charter School. He most recently averaged 14.2 ppg, 7.1 apg and 5.6 rpg en route to All-League and All-Metro accolades. He played for the club team, the Cali Stars Elite, and was named the top scholar athlete by the Cal-Hi Sports Report three times.
"Garrett is high motor high IQ point guard with the ability to play on or off the ball," said Jones. "He is an exceptional passer and leader, and makes all the guys around him better. His toughness and ball handling ability should help fill the void left in the backcourt created by the graduations of Eric Johnson, Cedric Hankerson and Will Goff."
A 6-foot-7 wingman, Fletcher Tynen (Torrance, Calif.) earned All CIF-Open Division First Team and Del Ray All-League First Team honors as a senior captain at Bishop Montgomery. He was named MVP at the 2017 Westchester Tip-Off Classic and raised eyebrows with his defensive abilities, as he guarded five-star players Marvin Bagley, Bol Bol and Jordan Brown during the team's playoff run en route to the CIF State Open championship. He also played for the club team, the LA Rockfish, and was named to his school's honor roll.
"Fletcher is a do it all guard-forward combo who can play and defend four positions on the floor," said Jones. "He is a hardnosed aggressive player with a high basketball IQ and is wired to do whatever it takes to win. We look forward to adding his versatility to our lineup."
A 6-foot-8 forward from Rancho Santa Margarita, California, Jordan Guest most recently helped lead Santa Margarita H.S. to the CIF State Tournament by averaging 13.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 2.3 apg and 0.9 bpg his senior year while shooting 49.2 FG% and 78.3 FT%. An All-Trinity League First Team and All-Orange County Second Team honoree, he finished his career with 1,250 points and 782 rebounds. Guest also played hoops with Gamepoint Elite on the AAU circuit.
"Jordan is a versatile and physical forward who will make our front court stronger," said Jones. "He can make plays and score around the basket. He also has a good feel for the game and can step out on the perimeter and knock down the 3-point shot."
With the addition of the four men, Jones will now have a total of five newcomers available to play in the fall. A redshirt-freshman from Texas Tech, Alex Vilarino enrolled at BU in January after spending the fall semester with the Red Raiders. He ranked No. 42 in New England Recruiting Report's Class of 2017. He received Class AAA Second Team honors at South Kent School (Conn.) and averaged 18.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 5.4 apg his senior year.
