BOSTON — Highlighted by a trip to Big Ten member Rutgers and the renewal of a longtime rivalry with Vermont at Case Gym, eighth-year Boston University men's basketball head coach Joe Jones has released the team's 2018-19 schedule.
The Terriers will be tested immediately, as four of the first five opponents will be coming off 20+ win performances. The program's 110th season opens on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at defending CAA co-regular season champion Northeastern in what has become one of college hoops' most exciting rivalries. Eight of the last 10 meetings have been decided by six or fewer points in regulation or required overtime for a victor to emerge.
Three days later on Nov. 9, BU tips off its 14-game home slate against defending America East regular season champion Vermont in the first meeting between the two programs since the Terriers joined the Patriot League in the summer of 2013. The matchup will mark the 100th all-time contest in the rivalry that dates back to 1922.
"Starting with seven of nine games on the road, our schedule was organized in an effort to challenge our program and put us in a position to learn and grow, as we head into conference play," said Jones. "We are excited to continue longtime rivalries and also renew old ones that date nearly 100 years. We have a lot of new faces and look forward to competing against these programs that will give us the type of experience we need to be successful in the PL."
In total, BU will compete in 31 regular season contests with four matchups against current America East members. Besides welcoming the Catamounts to The Roof, the Terriers will also host UMass Lowell on Dec. 4 after making trips to both Albany (Nov. 14) and New Hampshire (Nov. 28). They will also renew rivalries at former America East member Drexel (Nov. 21) and Ivy League foe Dartmouth (Dec. 13). The non-conference slate will conclude at home against Nicholls State (Dec. 15) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 21), who combined for 39 wins this past season.
The Patriot League schedule will open at American on Jan. 2 and conclude at home on March 2 against Navy. Two of the matchups have been selected for CBS Sports Network's Monday night package with the Terriers hosting American (Jan. 21) and traveling to Holy Cross (Feb. 23). The annual Turnpike Trophy series against the Crusaders will tip off at Case Gym on Jan. 30.
BU advanced to the Patriot League semifinals for the second consecutive season last spring and currently owns the ninth-longest active streak in the nation of finishing .500 or better in conference play at 18 straight seasons.
Season tickets for men's basketball will be $99 for the general public with special pricing for faculty/staff ($78) and young alumni ($52). Last year's season ticket holders can renew by logging into their Agganis Arena account on Ticketmaster.com.
