BOSTON – Hosting American Wednesday night at Case Gym, the Boston University women's basketball team could not get past the defending Patriot League champions as it fell, 64-51.
Payton Hauck led the Terriers with 12 points, all coming in the second half, while Nia Irving fell just shy of her third straight double-double, notching 10 points to go with nine rebounds. Naiyah Thompson and Riley Childs each put up stat lines of eight points and eight rebounds, and Katie Nelson dished out four assists.
How It Happened
Payton Hauck led the Terriers with 12 points, all coming in the second half, while Nia Irving fell just shy of her third straight double-double, notching 10 points to go with nine rebounds. Naiyah Thompson and Riley Childs each put up stat lines of eight points and eight rebounds, and Katie Nelson dished out four assists.
How It Happened
- Irving came out on the attack, netting the first four points of the game to give the Terriers the early edge just over two minutes into play.
- BU came to a standstill on the offensive end, turning the ball over nine times as American closed out the quarter with a 15-0 run.
- The Eagles took their largest lead at 26-8 before the Terriers kicked the offense up a notch with a 7-2 run, capped by a Lauren Spearman 3-pointer, to trail by 14 at the half.
- Regrouping at the break, Hauck and Irving got the combined for the first four field goals, while the defense swatted a pair of shots to trim the deficit to single digits.
- Hauck extended an 8-0 BU run with a jumper from just inside the arc, put the Terriers within striking distance at 34-27.
- The Terriers held American scoreless for 5:28 before the Eagles got back on the board, but Nelson concluded the third quarter with a 3-pointer to trim the gap to 39-31.
- Childs and Thomspon hit on makes inside the paint before two Hauck free throws keep the game within reach, 46-39, with just under seven minutes left.
- American put an end to the comeback with an 11-2 run over the next two minutes, and coasted to its first win at Case Gym since 2015.
- BU gave up just one offense rebound over the first 20 minutes.
- American scored 17 of its 29 points in the first half off turnovers.
- The Terriers shot 54.4 percent from the floor and held the Eagles to just a 30.8 percent shooting clip in the third quarter.
- BU will break for a two-game road swing, starting Saturday, Jan. 26 at Navy for a 4 p.m. tilt.
