BOSTON – For the 23rd-consecutive year, Boston University student-athletes visited Boston Public Schools and read to school children through the annual Holiday Reading Program on Thursday and Friday. The annual event, which dates back to 1997, brought over 260 BU Terriers from all 24 varsity teams out into the community to interact with Boston Public School children.
In conjunction with BU's Government and Community Affairs Department, the athletes read to elementary school children and then presented each student with a book purchased by Boston University. In addition to each student receiving a book, each classroom was also given a book donated by BU for the teacher's permanent collection.
"The Holiday Reading Program is a wonderful opportunity for the Terriers to visit the neighborhoods of Boston and serve as mentors and role models to inner-city children," said director of athletics Drew Marrochello, who visited the Blackstone Innovation School in Boston's South End. "This program is one of the highlights of our year and we hope the Boston Public Schools enjoyed the experience as much as we did."
This year, student-athletes visited 30 classrooms in eight schools and read to over 570 children throughout Boston, many of whose schools neighbor the Charles River and Medical campuses. The two-day event, held this year on Dec. 12 and 13, took place at schools in Allston, Brighton, the South End, Dorchester and as far away as East Boston.
"We always look forward to getting out into the Boston community and having the Terriers interact with these children in such a positive way," said executive director of BU Government & Community Affairs Elizabeth Leary. "The Holiday Reading Program is such an amazing event for the Boston Public School children and it wouldn't' be possible without these great BU student-athletes volunteering their time."
