BOSTON – After traveling to major conference opponents West Virginia (Big 12) and South Carolina (SEC), the 2019-20 Boston University men's basketball team will fly further south to Mexico for two more games as part of the 12th annual Cancun Challenge, tournament officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement marks the first time the Terriers will participate in a regular season event outside the continental United States since competing at the 2009 Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
BU will open its trip to Cancun at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya against Northern Colorado on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 3 p.m. ET and will then face either Gardner-Webb or the University of Tennessee-Martin on Wednesday, Nov. 27 (12:30 p.m./3 p.m. ET).
While the Terriers, Bears, the Runnin' Bulldogs and Skyhawks compete in the Mayan Division in Mexico, South Carolina, West Virginia, Wichita State and Northern Iowa will face off against one another in the Riviera Division.
BU will visit South Carolina on Tuesday, Nov. 19, for the first time since dropping a 93-86 decision in Boston on Feb. 21, 1981. The Gamecocks also prevailed at home, 83-76, on Feb. 18, 1980.
The Terriers are 0-2 all-time against West Virginia with a heartbreaking 86-82 defeat to NBA legend Jerry West and the Mountaineers in the 1959 NCAA Elite Eight. BU last met West Virginia at the 1974-75 Presidential Classic in Washington, D.C.
BU has never faced Northern Colorado or Gardner-Webb but did beat Tennessee-Martin, 67-64, at the 1991-92 University of Indiana Classic.
Games are played in the modified ballroom at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya; teams and their fans are in walking distance from their rooms to the games to the restaurants to poolside. The Cancun Challenge also includes games played at host sites in the US.
