WEST POINT, N.Y. – Visiting Army West Point for its final trip of the regular season, the Boston University women's basketball team stormed out of the gates and never looked back, cruising past the Black Knights 67-42 Saturday at Christl Arena.
With the win, BU has clinched a home quarterfinal Patriot League Tournament game. The Terriers will host a quarterfinal game on Monday, March 11, marking the first time the Terriers will host a quarterfinal Patriot League Tournament game and their first postseason home game since 2013.
Additionally, BU locked up a winning season for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign. Furthermore, head coach
Marisa Moseley becomes the first first-year head coach in program history to post a winning record since JoAnn O'Callagan during her inaugural season in 1979-80.
Four different Terriers scored in double figures, led by a 19-point effort by
Payton Hauck on 8-of-11 shooting.
Lauren Spearman and
Katie Nelson each connected on three makes from beyond-the-arc, pouring in 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Nia Irving also posted double figures with 10 points, while Childs led the Terriers on the glass with nine rebounds.
How it Happened
- Childs opened the game by making a tough layup from the block and Spearman drilled a 3-pointer from the wing on the ensuing possession to make it 5-0.
- Nelson caught fire by driving through the lane for a layup before hitting a step-back 3-pointer to bookend a 9-0 run, making it 14-2 seven minute into action.
- Naiyah Thompson capped the opening frame with a drive from the top of the key to put the scoreboard in favor of the Terriers at 18-6.
- Irving and Vanessa Edgehill connected on back-to-back mid-range jumpers, furthering the command to 28-12 midway through the second quarter.
- Hauck unloaded a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the first half as the Terriers held firm with a 34-20 advantage at the break.
- Spearman started the second half by drilling a triple to start a 13-4 run, capped by a Nelson 3-pointer to push the gap to 23, BU's largest lead of the game at 47-24 midway through the third.
- Hauck and Irving chipped in the final eight points of the quarter to hold the score at 54-35.
- Spearman stayed red-hot to start the final frame, connecting on back-to-back makes from deep as BU coasted to the season sweep of the Black Knights.
