HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England - Boston University men's rowing will once again race at the Henley Royal Regatta beginning on Wednesday, July 3rd. BU will send two boats to the prestigious competition with the eight boat competing for the Temple Cup while the 4+ will compete for the Prince Albert Cup
WEDNESDAY RACE SCHEDULE
Temple Cup 10:20 am ET
BU vs. Exeter University
Prince Albert Cup 12:35 pm ET
BU vs. University of London
"The Draw" for the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta took place on Saturday, July 29th to determine who the Terriers will race. The BU eight will face Exeter University at 10:20 am ET while the Terriers' 4+ will take on the University of London at 12:35 pm ET in the opening round on Wednesday. Races are head-to-head knock out competitions with the winning boat moving on to the next round and the losing boat being eliminated.
"Racing at the Henley Regatta is always a goal of our program," said Boston University head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "This is a great opportunity for some of our student-athletes to get four additional weeks of training and competition at a very high level which should make us faster going into next year. Also, from a recruiting standpoint, the entire rowing world is watching Henley. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious rowing regattas in the world, so kids who might not have originally considered BU see us competing and now BU is on the table."
This week will mark the fourth time in the history of the Boston University men's rowing program that the Terriers have competed at Henley. BU last made the trip across the pond in 2017 when the Terriers' 4+ defeated the University of Bristol by ¾ of a length before falling to Durham University in the second round. Also in 2017, the BU 4- defeated Cornell University by 4 ¼ lengths to advance before falling to Leander Club in round two.
The Henley Royal Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars, over the first weekend in July, (Wed. through Sun.).
