Defense Leads Terriers Past American, 59-44

BOSTON – Led by a stout defensive effort, the Boston University women's basketball team sunk American, 59-44, Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Terriers held American to its lowest scoring total ever in the 18-game series, limiting the Eagles to connect at just 26.0 percent (13-for-50) from the floor.
Maren Durant grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and came just a point shy of recording her first double-double. Maggie Pina led the team with 12 points, while Annabelle Larnard and Katie Nelson and followed with 11 points apiece.

The Terriers held American to its lowest scoring total ever in the 18-game series, limiting the Eagles to connect at just 26.0 percent (13-for-50) from the floor.
Maren Durant grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and came just a point shy of recording her first double-double. Maggie Pina led the team with 12 points, while Annabelle Larnard and Katie Nelson and followed with 11 points apiece.
How It Happened
- Riley Childs worked for a putback layup, Larnard knocked down a 3-pointer, and Nelson put in two from the line to start the Terriers with a 7-0 advantage four minutes in.
- All five members of the starting lineup got on the scoreboard in the opening quarter to give the Terriers a 15-6 edge.
- BU attacked the paint to start the second, as Sydney Johnson and Durant went for layups to further the lead to double digits, 19-8.
- Johnson bookended a 10-0 run over a four-minute span with a jumper at the top of the key, paving the way for the Terriers to grip a 29-14 hold on the scoreboard entering the intermission.
- Pina provided a jolt of energy to start the second half, netting five straight points.
- Larnard connected from beyond-the-arc before Pina added another 3-pointer, holding the score at 42-25 midway through in the third.
- The Terriers connected on 6-of-10 from the floor in the frame to pull ahead, 49-31.
- Durant started the fourth off with a pair from the line to give the Terriers a 20-point lead, their largest of the contest.
- Sunday marked the first win in five tries against American while bringing BU's home record in the series to 4-3.
- The defense recorded its best performance of a single quarter this season, limiting the Eagles to connect on just 2-of-10 from the floor for six points.
- BU held American's Jade Edwards, the Patriot League's second-leading scorer, to just one point in the first half.
- Childs and Tenisha Pressley followed Durant with eight rebounds each.
- The Terriers will head back on the road for a two-game swing, starting Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Lehigh.
- Opening tip from Bethlehem is scheduled for 6 p.m.
