Terriers Roll to 86-68 Win over Holy Cross

BOSTON – Boosted by a strong shooting performance and senior Sukhmail Mathon's double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team rolled to an 86-68 wire-to-wire victory over Holy Cross on Sunday evening at Case Gym.
Finishing 32-of-51 (.627) from the field, the Terriers moved to 4-6 (4-6 PL), while the Crusaders dropped to 3-9 (3-9 PL) in the weekend split. BU recorded a 10-6 advantage in made 3-pointers and also outscored the Crusaders in the paint, 40-28.
Senior Javante McCoy keyed the offense with a game-high 21 points by shooting 7-of-9 and a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe while adding a season-high six assists. Mathon collected 11 points and a season-high 12 rebounds with two blocks, as junior Walter Whyte recorded 16 points and two steals. Gerrale Gates led Holy Cross with 16 points and six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mathon won the jump ball, and junior Jonas Harper fed McCoy for the 3-pointer to give BU the lead for good.
- Owning a 7-6 lead, Mathon hit a layup and followed with a 3-pointer to ignite an 11-2 run capped by Whyte's layup at 13:56 for the 18-8 advantage.
- The Crusaders pulled within seven (22-15) on Gates' 3-point play at 11:36, but BU scored seven quick points with Tynen adding a 3-pointer at 10:01.
- Austin Butler cut BU's lead to single digits for the last time at 2:44 on a driving layup (37-28), but the Terriers scored eight of the final 10 points, highlighted by redshirt freshman Daman Tate's steal and fastbreak layup.
- Whyte started the second half with an emphatic slam dunk, and sophomore Garrett Pascoe gave BU its largest lead of the day at 12:47 (67-39) on a 3-pointer.
- Holy Cross shot 54.2 percent in the second half after being held to 38.7 FG% in the first, but the Terriers remained above 60.0 FG% in the second half to prevent any chance of a rally.
- BU's field goal percentage was the program's highest since the Terriers shot 35-of-54 (.648) in an 90-87 win at Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 8, 2017.
- McCoy has scored 21 points in two consecutive home games with BU last hosting Army West Point on Jan. 17 and has now moved into the No. 19 all-time spot in the program record book at 1,199 career points, surpassing LeVar Folk ('99).
- Mathon earned his second double-double of the season and his third career after earlier posting 13 points and 11 boards vs. Colgate.
- Junior Fletcher Tynen tallied nine points off the bench, while classmate Jack Hemphill added three assists and a 3-pointer.
- The Terriers dished out a season-high 18 assists after recording just four in Saturday's 82-65 defeat at Holy Cross.
- The Terriers and Crusaders will make program history on Wednesday, as they will square off again at the Hart Center at 5 p.m.
- They will be meeting an opponent for the third consecutive game for the first time in program history.
- The series is currently even, 2-2, with Wednesday and next Wednesday's regular season matchups remaining.
