BOSTON – Looking to carry momentum from Sunday's 18-point win over Holy Cross, the Boston University men's basketball team will visit the Crusaders on Wednesday evening for a 5 p.m. tip.
Wednesday's matchup will mark the fifth of six scheduled regular season contests between the two in-state rivals with the series currently tied at 2-2. Both programs will be making history in the midweek clash, as neither has ever faced an opponent three times in a row.
The Terriers (4-6, 4-6 PL) had their best shooting performance (62.7 FG%) since 2017-18 with senior Javante McCoy shooting 7-of-9 en route to a season-high 21 points. He currently leads the team at 17.0 ppg and 2.5 apg, while classmate Sukhmail Mathon (11.0 ppg) owns a team-high 7.5 rpg after earning his second double-double of the season on Sunday. Junior Walter Whyte is the third Terrier in double figures at 14.3 ppg and has added 7.0 rpg.
Another key factor to the team's win was the bench's performance, as junior Fletcher Tynen (4.4 ppg) totaled nine points and junior Jack Hemphill (7.3 ppg) dished out three assists while adding a 3-pointer. Sophomore Garrett Pascoe (3.0 ppg) contributed six points as well to help BU claim the wire-to-wire victory.
Holy Cross (3-9, 3-9 PL) was held to 38.7 FG% during the first half and was never able to recover in the 86-68 loss after shooting 57.4 FG% in Saturday's home 82-65 win over BU. Gerrale Gates leads the Crusaders at 18.0 ppg and 7.8 rpg with Austin Butler averaging 13.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Overall, the Crusaders are averaging 70.3 ppg and 44.4 FG% while holding opponents to 78.7 ppg and 46.6 FG%.
Back at the start of the season on Jan. 4-5, BU claimed an 83-76 win at the Hart Center but was edged in the rematch at Case Gym, 68-66. In the four meetings, BU has been averaging six more rebounds per game but has also been committing 2.5 extra turnovers. Both teams are making approximately seven made 3-pointers a contest with BU hitting two extra free throws.
