Colgate Pulls Away in Second Half to Upend Men's Basketball, 72-53

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Trying to remain in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament, the Boston University men's basketball team fell at Colgate, 72-53, on Saturday afternoon.
Helped by a 10-3 advantage in made 3-pointers, the Raiders (17-11, 13-2 PL) extended their win streak to nine games, as the Terriers (19-10, 10-6) saw their current win streak halted at four contests. Facing a 30-27 halftime deficit, Colgate shot 55.6 FG% in the second half and held BU to 34.6 FG% to avenge January's 76-72 loss at Case Gym.
Graduate student Javante McCoy went 7-of-14 from the field for 16 points and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Classmate Sukhmail Mathon had a game-high eight rebounds with 11 points, while senior Walter Whyte recorded 10 points and five boards.
Nelly Cummings shot just 5-of-16 but went a perfect 6-of-6 at the line to finish with 18 points, while Jack Ferguson flushed four 3-pointers en route to 15 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Moffatt and Keegan Records combined for 22 points, 13 boards and seven assists to help the Raiders.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Mathon and McCoy hit back-to-back buckets for an early 8-4 lead, the Raiders scored nine straight with the help of 3-pointers from Moffatt and Cummings to pull ahead, 13-8, at 12:54.
- Facing an 18-13 deficit with 9:17 left in the half, the Terriers chipped away and eventually retook the lead, 20-19, at 4:20 on senior Jonas Harper's free throw.
- Mathon followed Whyte's 3-pointer with two free throws to give BU its largest lead of the game, 28-21, at 1:41, but Ferguson and Cummings both struck from behind the arc to pull within three (30-27) entering the locker room.
- Harper started the second half with a 3-pointer, but Ferguson came ritht back with one of his own to spark a 21-4 run capped by Oliver Lynch-Daniels' bomb at 10:28.
- Mathon briefly cut Colgate's lead to single digits, 48-39, at 9:27, but the Raiders scored eight straight and would build their advantage to as high as 21 (66-45) before finishing ahead by 19.
- McCoy became the fifth Terrier and 11 player in Patriot League history to reach 1,800 career points.
- Mathon moved up to third all-time at BU at 811 career rebounds with his 293 boards this season counting as the ninth most at BU in one season.
- Colgate tied the all-time series again, 30-30, as BU tried to claim its first sweep over the Raiders since 2014.
- The Terriers will next conclude the home slate Wednesday (Feb. 23) against Lafayette with a 7 p.m. tip.
- BU won the previous meeting, 81-62, back on Jan. 26.
