DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Competing in the Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI) quarterfinals, the No. 10-seeded Boston University men's basketball team fell to No. 2 Middle Tennessee, 76-46, on Monday night at the Ocean Center.
Shooting 65.2 percent from the field in the second half, the Conference USA East Division champion Blue Raiders improve to 25-10, while the Terriers (22-13) see their season end with the fifth most wins in program history.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Year and graduate student
Sukhmail Mathon earned his 18th double-double of the season with a team-high 12 points and game-high 11 rebounds after leading BU with 18 points and nine boards in Sunday's opening-round win against No. 10 UNC Greensboro. Classmate
Javante McCoy tallied 11 points, while senior
Walter Whyte flushed three 3-pointers en route to 11 points.
Seeing its first action since Saturday's CBI opening round win over Cal Baptist, MTSU featured four men in double figures with Teafale Lenard posting 14 points. Donovan Sims recorded 13 points, six assists and six rebounds, while both DeAndre Dishman and Elias King tallied 12 points apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lenard opened with a 3-pointer and Sims responded to Mathon's layup with one of his own for an early 5-2 advantage.
- Junior Ethan Brittain-Watts tied the game at 7-7 with a 3-pointer, but Eli Lawrence flushed one in response to take the lead for good.
- Mathon cut the deficit to 21-19 on two free throws at 8:19, but MTSU finished the half on a 17-5 run with King hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 38-24 advantage.
- The Blue Raiders continued the run by scoring the first six points of the second half on a pair of jumpers and a layup.
- Whyte hit a 3-pointer at 16:55 to cut the lead to 44-27, but MTSU scored five straight and never saw its lead fall below 20 the rest of the game.
GAME NOTES
- Facing MTSU for the first time in program history, the Terriers dropped to 3-2 all-time in the CBI after reaching the semifinals back in 2010.
- Mathon played a program-record 151 games without missing a single contest. He finishes No. 3 all-time at BU and No. 7 in the PL with 875 rebounds. He's also No. 7 at BU with 79 blocks and 53.0 FG% while adding 1,073 points (No. 32 most). His 357 rebounds this season were the third most at BU and fifth in the PL.
- McCoy set the record for minutes played (4,437) and finishes No. 4 at BU with 1,930 points, ninth most in the PL. His 731 made field goals are second all-time at BU, while his 200 3-pointers rank No. 6. He also ranks No. 9 with 379 career assists.
- Whyte increased his career totals to 1,238 points and 645 rebounds.
- The Blue Raiders entered the game ranked 41st in steals (8.0 spg) and 65th in blocks (4.2 bpg). Using their length and size, they finished with nine steals and five blocks, respectively,
- BU finished 17-of-53 for a season-low 32.1 percent from the field and also 5-of-25 (.200) in 3-point territory.
