Terrier Twelve - #12: Women’s Basketball Matches Program PL Wins Record

June 28, 2022

Returning for a 14th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Tipping off this year's countdown at No. 12 is the women's basketball team, as the Terriers matched a program record with 12 wins against Patriot League foes in the 2021-22 season.

Under first-year head coach Melissa Graves, BU set a program record by winning its first six Patriot League contests. The Terriers paced the league with a .423 field goal percentage, .340 three-point percentage, and 4.4 blocks per game. During league play, BU led its counterparts with 65.1 points per game and 40.4 rebounds per contest.

Overall, the Terriers totaled 17 wins on the season. This included a 76-47 win over UMass Lowell on opening night, which served as the largest margin of victory for BU in a season opener since 1977. The Terriers also took down local rival Boston College 69-65 on Nov. 17, the program's first win over an ACC opponent in four seasons.

Four different Terriers garnered All-Patriot League accolades, which was tops in the conference. Junior guard Sydney Johnson led the way with a First Team selection, becoming the third Terrier in program history to be chosen for the All-PL First Team. Johnson set a career high and totaled the highest scoring average by a Terrier in BU's nine seasons as a league member with 15.7 points per game.

Junior forward Maren Durant received All-PL Third Team, All-Defensive Team, and Academic All-League honors following a junior campaign where she led the Terriers in rebounding and blocks. During the year, she moved into fifth place all-time at BU with 125 career blocks, and will enter her senior year as the program leader with a career .581 field goal percentage.

In their first years with the Terriers, sophomore forward Caitlin Weimar and freshman guard Alex Giannaros were named to the All-PL Third Team and All-Rookie Team, respectively. Weimar was one of four Patriot League student-athletes to average a double-double during league play with 11.3 points and 10.1 boards per game. Giannaros was second among league rookies and seventh overall with 12.9 points per Patriot League contest.
