July 13, 2022 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON – Former Boston University men's basketball standout Sukhmail Mathon is headed to the Netherlands to continue his professional basketball career. The 2021-22 Patriot League Player of the Year signed a contract to join the Landstede Hammers of the BNXT League for the 2022-23 season.
The Hammers are located in Zwolle, a city with a population of over 130,000 in the northeastern Netherlands. The club was formed in 1995 and won its first Dutch Basketball League title in 2019. The DBL merged last season with Belgium's top league to form the BNXT League.
Earning BU's first Player of the Year honor from a conference since 2012, Mathon averaged BU's first double-double in 25 seasons at 15.1 ppg and 10.2 rpg. The Shavertown, Pennsylvania, native, ended his collegiate career No. 7 all-time at BU with 79 blocks and 53.0 FG% while adding 1,073 points (No. 32 most). His 357 rebounds this past season were the third most at BU and fifth in the Patriot League, as he added his second PL All-Defensive Team honor.
Mathon posted 18 double-doubles, including a 12-point, 11-rebound performance in the CBI quarterfinals against Middle Tennessee. He scored a career-high 26 points at Holy Cross with 13 rebounds and had a personal-best 18 rebounds vs. Bucknell alongside 21 points. Showing his durability, he appeared in all 151 games with the Terriers.
