Dillon Elevated To Men's Rowing Associate Head Coach
October 17, 2023 | Men's Rowing
BOSTON – Prior to the start of the 2023 Head of the Charles, Alex Dillon (CAS'16) has been promoted to the associate head coach of the Boston University men's rowing program, Head Coach Thomas Bohrer officially announced on Tuesday.
"I am extremely excited to elevate Alex to this role," said Bohrer. "He has worked tirelessly for the past four years in all aspects of the job - coaching, recruiting, and mentoring our student-athletes. It has been great to see his growth and confidence build over the years. I am grateful for the work he is doing and proud to continue working with him."
Dillon is set to begin his fifth season coaching at his alma mater, having served as an assistant coach for four year.
"I feel incredibly privileged for the opportunity to give back to the program that has given me so much," remarked Dillon. "I believe in Boston University Men's Rowing, and I am very fortunate to call it home. I would like the thank Director of Athletics Drew Marochello and Head Coach Thomas Bohrer for their constant support."
During Dillon's tenure, BU has posted multiple top-10 finishes at the IRA National Championship Regatta, including consecutive 10th-place finishes in 2022 and 2023. Last year, the Terriers' Second Varsity 8 placed eighth at the IRAs after entering the field as the 12th seed. That spring, the 2V8 also collected wins over Wisconsin and Georgetown.
Since Dillon returned to Terrier Town, each BU crew at the Head of the Charles has registered a top-20 finish in their respective events. This includes the 55th installment of the regatta in 2019, when the top boats in each event posted a top-10 result among collegiate crews.
Prior to joining the BU coaching staff, Dillon served as the head coach of Boston College's men's rowing program, which was highlighted by the varsity crew's silver medal at the 2019 American Collegiate Rowing Association Club Rowing Championships.
Dillon rowed for the program from 2012-16. He occupied the bow seat in the Terriers' bronze-winning Second Varsity 8 at the 2015 IRA Championships, which was the first third-place performance for the 2V8, or any eight boat, in program history. During his tenure, BU posted three top-seven team finishes at the IRAs.
