February 19, 2023 | Women's Swimming & Diving
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Haley Newman won her second event of the Patriot League Championships and joined junior Lara Mitchell in breaking school records to help the Boston University women's swimming & diving team finish fourth in the team standings as the conference meet wrapped up on Saturday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
Sophia Souza secured a BU sweep in the women's diving events as the sophomore secured the 3-meter title with a score of 311.10. She was one of four Terriers to score in the event with junior Sumi Cameron coming in fourth (302.35) and sophomore Marina Cataldo finishing eighth (249.15) along with junior Karina Moy taking third (263.90) in the consolation final.
Cameron was named the Women's Diver of the Meet as she won the 1-meter event on Thursday and nearly reached the podium again on Saturday. She is the third Terrier to win the award, joining Kyra Tatlow (2017) and Lizzie Tillow (2015).
Newman claimed the title in the 200-yard butterfly, posting a 1:58.58 to top the school record of 1:59.01, set by Amanda Schmitz in 2012. Her time was an NCAA "B" cut.
Mitchell collected her third medal of the meet when she finished third in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:57.90, topping her own school record by nearly a second. Sophomore Alex Pastushan was fifth in the consolation final with a time of 2:02.68, which earned her four points.
In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Madison Kim touched the wall in 51.41 for a runner-up finish in the B final and seven points towards the team total.
The Terriers needed a strong performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay to finish fourth and they got it as Newman, Kim, Mitchell and junior Sydney Sorbello finished fourth with a time of 3:24.51, two spots ahead of Lehigh, enabling the team to finish 3.5 points ahead of the Mountain Hawks.
Sophomore Ashley Scafetta finished 13th in the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:30.29 to collect four points and also added one more point with her performance in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.91).
Sophomore Keilah Eckhart swam the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:04.09, good for fourth in the consolation final and five points
