Terriers Finish Second At Patriot League Championship
May 12, 2023 | Women's Rowing
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Boston University women's rowing program placed second in the 2023 Patriot League Championships, held on Friday (May 12) at Lake Quinsigamond.
BU tied for first in the team standings with 51 points, thanks to Grand Final victories in the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4. However, Navy won the team title with 51 points as well thanks to its triumph in the Varsity 8 Grand Final.
The Terrier Varsity 4, coxed by Kennedy Walker and stroked by Luisa Reussner, won the Grand Final in a time of 7:36.176, over two seconds ahead of the Mids in second after leading by as much as seven seats throughout the race. The effort marks BU's first Patriot League Varsity 4 Grand Final win since joining the conference for the 2014 spring season.
For the second year in a row, BU won gold in the Second Varsity 8. The Terriers, coxed by Audrey Lucerne and stroked by Tiare Hicks, went wire-to-wire in the Grand Final, crossing the finish line with over a full-length advantage in 6:50.194. Navy earned the silver seven seconds later.
BU's Varsity 8, coxed by Trisha Jaggi and stroked by Ellie Brindle, held an edge through the first half of the course. However, the Mids' high stroke rate held in the final 1,000 meters, allowing the Mids to take over and finish first. The Terriers were second by just under four seconds in a time of 6:40.440.
In the morning, the Terriers captured first place in all three heats, posting the fastest V8 and 2V8 times in the field. BU's Varsity 4 went bow-to-bow with second-place Georgetown in the opening 500 meters before pulling away for a full-length lead at the finish line, as the clock read 7:38.60.
The next race featured a substantial lead for the Second Varsity 8. In first from start to finish, BU's time of 6:49.71 was three lengths of open water over runner-up MIT.
BU's Varsity 8 went wire-to-wire to cap the morning, cruising to a first-place finish in 6:47.78, nearly six seconds ahead of MIT in second place.
Navy receives the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championship, while also securing the 2023 Patriot League Boat and Coach of the Year.
