BU Posts Top-Three Petite Final Results At Eastern Sprints

May 14, 2023

WORCESTER, Mass. – A Third Varsity 8 Petite Final victory highlighted the No. 13 Boston University men's rowing program's performance at the 2023 Eastern Sprints, held on Sunday (May 14) at Lake Quinsigamond.

Competing against some of the top Northeast-based crews in the sport, BU sent all four of its crews to the Petite Finals, posting top-three results in their respective races. The Terriers have won a Petite Final in the last three Eastern Sprints, with the Second and Fourth Varsity 8 boats winning in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

BU's Fourth Varsity 8, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by John Sherburne, began the day with a fourth-place result in its morning heat, having missed a spot in the Grand Final by just over three-tenths. The crew responded with a bronze-medal performance in the Petite Final, edging Cornell by two-and-a-half seconds with a time of 5:52.321.

The Third Varsity 8, coxed by Peter Adams and stroked by Dylan Fagiani, clocked in at 5:51.635 in the morning heats. Locked into a duel with Cornell in the Petite Final, BU improved on its heat time with a 5:50.200 result, beating the Big Red by under seven-tenths to win the race.

In the Second Varsity 8, which was coxed by Emily Slawin and stroked by Ethan Feldman, BU fended off Navy by under two seconds in 5:45.467 to move on to the Petite Final. The race provided an entertaining finish as four crews finished within one length of each other, with the Terriers taking third at 5:46.560, dispatching Penn by seven-tenths but trailing Northeastern by nearly five-tenths.

BU's 13th-ranked Varsity 8, coxed by Micah Lee and stroked by Paul Seiters, placed fourth in its heat with a time of 5:43.316. The Petite Final saw a close contest between the six crews, but the Terriers came in second with a time of 5:36.554, just over a second-and-a-half behind No. 9 Northeastern. BU outpaced No. 17 Georgetown and 14th-ranked Penn by two seconds.

The Terriers turn their attention to the 2023 IRA National Championship Regatta, which begins on Friday (June 2) at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
