Terrier Twelve - #11: Men's Soccer Rides Nine Shutouts to Pair of Major PL Awards

June 30, 2023

Returning for a 15th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we count down this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com

Coming in at No. 11 in this year's Terrier Twelve is men's soccer, highlighted by its first win over a top-10 opponent since 2009 and two seniors in goalkeeper Francesco Montali and defender Griffin Roach claiming major Patriot League year-end awards. The duo helped BU end the year with its most shutouts since 2014 at nine total, including a 1-0 victory over ninth-ranked New Hampshire.

Recipient of the Terriers' first PL Goalkeeper of the Year honor in seven years, Montali finished the season fourth nationally with a .839 save percentage, seventh with a 0.620 goals against average and 10th at eight solo shutouts. In the victory over the Wildcats, he recorded five saves and was assisted by classmate Ryan Lee's 78th minute goal and also the backline in clearing 18 corner kicks.

After claiming their first clean sheet against ACC rival Boston College in 10 years, the Terriers added five more during conference play. Named BU's fifth-ever conference Defensive Player of the Year, Roach scored his first career goal in a 2-0 victory over Bucknell and followed up by anchoring the backline to its first-ever road win against defending Patriot League champion Loyola Maryland.

Also claiming wins over American and Lehigh, BU placed second in the PL standings for the first time since 2017 with a 4-2-3 conference mark. The Terriers earned an opening round bye in their first PL tournament appearance in five years and came up just short during the semifinals in a thrilling 9-8 penalty kick shootout to Navy.

Senior Quinn Matulis led BU with 12 points off four goals and four assists, while classmate Colin Innes also had four goals. Junior Andrew Rent delivered a team-high five assists. All three men joined Montali and Roach in claiming All-PL accolades alongside graduate student Evan Morrison, the lone honoree not returning for the 2023 campaign.
