BOSTON – Despite 24 points from senior Alex Giannaros as well as 12 points and six assists from sophomore Bella McLaughlin, the Boston University women's basketball program dropped a 69-61 contest to Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon at Case Gym.

BU (2-3) turned what was an 11-point deficit at its peak to a one-possession game midway through the fourth quarter, but the Hoyas (3-3) ended the game on a 7-1 run to seal the result.

Giannaros made eight of her 11 shots, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. McLaughlin sank 50 percent of her shots as well, while classmate Audrey Ericksen scored eight points.

Jayden McBride led four Hoyas in double figures with 18 points, adding five boards and three steals. Ariel Jenkins poured in 16 points and eight caroms.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Giannaros drove down the right lane to make it 5-3 Georgetown early, but a 5-0 Hoya spurt over three minutes built a 10-3 edge for the visitors.
That run extended to 9-2 for a 14-5 Hoya advantage. However, after trailing by 10, the Terriers ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run.
BU took the lead twice in the first 3:14 of the second quarter on layups from Ericksen and McLaughlin.
However, McBride accounted for seven points in a 9-0 Georgetown run that put the visitors ahead 29-21 with 4:13 to play in the first half.
BU scored the final four points of the second as freshman Allison Schwertner and Giannaros each fended off contact on the blocks for layups, the latter beating the buzzer for a 31-26 Hoya lead at halftime.
Schwertner's layup and Ericksen's three opened the Terrier scoring in the third quarter and knotted the game at 31-31 just 1:24 into the stanza.
However, Georgetown countered with an 11-2 run featuring triples from Khadee Hession and Victoria Rivera to make it 42-33 with 6:13 left in the third.
Approaching the horn, Giannaros canned a right-wing three to pull BU within 56-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
The senior drilled a straightaway three at the BU logo on center court to ignite the fourth quarter, then drained three foul shots four minutes later, trimming Georgetown's edge to 62-57 with 5:42 left in regulation.
With 4:24 on the timer, Giannaros' outlet pass found McLaughlin for a three-pointer that made it 62-60, but Jenkins answered with a second-chance layup to replenish the lead to two possessions.
McLaughlin's free throw a minute afterwards was BU's final point on the day, as Jenkins converted another layup on the next Georgetown possession and McBride canned her third three-pointer.

STATS

The Terriers made nearly 47 percent of their shots, including a season best 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from distance.
Georgetown hit 25 baskets on 46.3 percent shooting, and was 9-for-21 beyond the arc.
The Hoyas won the glass with 34 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards.
McLaughlin accounted for six of BU's 12 assists.
The Terriers turned 15 Hoyas turnovers into 14 points.

NOTES

Giannaros' 24 points are the most by a Terrier this year. She is now one point behind Jamie Nicholls '99 for 23rd on BU's all-time scoring list.
This is the first time Giannaros has produced consecutive 20-plus point games in a season. The only other instance it has occurred was the season opener against Northeastern on Nov. 4 after the Patriot League championship back on Mar. 17.
McLaughlin has scored 26 points in her last two games, making nine of her 17 shots. Her six assists mark a career best.
Prior to Wednesday, the last time BU shot better than 50 percent from deep was Jan. 20 against Colgate.
Georgetown collects its first victory ever against the Terriers as the all-time series moves to 1-1.
