BOSTON – Despite senior
Miles Brewster tallying a game-high and career-tying 21 points, the Boston University men's basketball team fell short to defending Patriot League champion Colgate, 74-64, on Wednesday night at Case Gym.
Down by as many as 10 with 7:27 left in regulation, the Terriers (9-15, 4-7 PL) pulled within one at 4:23 on junior
Ethan Okwuosa's layup but went scoreless for nearly four minutes, as the Raiders (16-8, 10-1 PL) extended their win streak to eight games. Colgate shot 60 percent from the field in the second half and finished the contest with a 9-6 advantage in made 3-pointers.
Brewster went 7-for-10, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc, to match his 21-point performance against American back on Jan. 10, while adding five rebounds and a pair of assists. Freshman
Kyrone Alexander also finished in double figures at 11 points, while sophomore
Otto Landrum tallied nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
Braeden Smith directed Colgate's offense with 11 points and 10 assists for the double-double while adding four steals. Keegan Records tallied a team-high 18 points, while Chandler Baker and Ryan Moffatt combined for 29 points behind three 3-pointers apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Moffatt started the game with a 3-pointer, Landrum responded with back-to-back layups and Brewster added another to give BU its lone lead of the game, 6-3, at 17:17.
- Moffatt retook the lead for good with back-to-back buckets from behind the arc following Brady Cummins' game-tying trey for a 12-6 advantage at 15:26.
- Freshman Kyrone Alexander helped hold the early Raider run by finding freshman Matai Baptiste for a 3-pointer and hitting a pair of free throws.
- Colgate though was able to maintain the lead and eventually increase it to 10 points, 32-22, with 2:40 remaining on Smith's layup.
- Facing a 32-24 halftime deficit, Brewster started the second half with a 3-pointer, as the the teams traded blows for the next 12 minutes.
- Brewster drained his final trey at 8:49 to put the deficit at 53-49, but Baker responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to tie Colgate's largest lead, 59-49, with 7:27 remaining.
- Okwuosa then sparked and capped an 11-2 run with layups to pull within one, 61-60, at 4:23.
- The Terriers though missed their next five field goal attempts, as the Raiders reeled off 11 straight points over the next four minutes, helped by seven free throws, to pull away.
GAME NOTES
- After the Terriers went 15 games to start the season without a 20+ point performance, they've had a player hit the mark six times over the last nine contests. BU is 4-2 in those contests.
- Brewster is a combined 10-for-15 (.667) over the last three games in 3-point territory.
- The Terriers finished 6-for-24 (.250) from behind the arc, dropping to 1-11 this season when held below 30 percent shooting.
- BU outscored the Raiders in the paint (34-30), in second-chance opportunities (11-5) and off fast breaks (10-3), but the Raiders held a 13-9 edge off turnovers along with a 23-11 advantage in bench production.
- Smith became the third opponent to dish out 10 assists this season.
- Colgate extended its win streak in the series to five games for a 34-30 all-time lead.
UP NEXT
- BU will visit Bucknell on Saturday (Feb. 10) with a 2 p.m. start time.
- In the previous meeting at Case Gym, the Bison saw their 20-point lead cut to six with 4:44 remaining before pulling away for a 73-57 victory.
- The Terriers won the last meeting at Sojka Pavilion a year ago, 69-61.
