No. 13 Men’s Rowing Takes Jablonic Cup At Lake Morey Invite
April 28, 2024 | Men's Rowing
FAIRLEE, Vt. – Highlighted by its victory to take the Jablonic Cup over Wisconsin, the 13th-ranked Boston University men's rowing team completed the Lake Morey Invite in a regatta featuring five top-20 programs in the IRCA/IRA poll.
BU faced off against No. 7 Syracuse, No. 10 Dartmouth, No. 15 Wisconsin, and No. 19 Georgetown over the weekend. BU's Varsity 8+ win over the Badger allowed the Terriers to retain the Jablonic Cup for the eighth time in the last nine editions. The Big Green and Orange were victorious to give each the Bill and Conlan Cup, respectively.
Saturday morning started out with flat water and a building quartering headwind throughout the session that varied up to five miles per hour. BU's Varsity 4+ and Fourth Varsity 8+ finished behind host Dartmouth to start the session, but the Third Varsity 8+ crossed the finish line first in 6:03.3 to beat Wisconsin and Georgetown. The Second Varsity 8+ did the same with open water in 5:55.7. In the Jablonic Cup race, BU's V8 triumphed with a time of 5:49.4, nearly four seconds ahead of the Badgers.
In the afternoon, the cross headwind reached up to nine miles per hour, creating choppy waters around the first 700 meters. BU's 4V8 beat out Syracuse for a second-place performance in 6:31.1, but the Orange 3V8 followed with a five-second win. A thrilling 2V8 race ended with the Terriers ahead by four-tenths of a second at 6:10.4. Syracuse closed out the eights with a victory in the V8 as BU crossed the line in 6:14.4. Dartmouth's two crews would once again take the V4.
Sunday's racing was dealt with a cross headwind from the south for moderate winds and choppy conditions to start the session, calming down following the first race, the V8. There, BU battled with Dartmouth and Wisconsin as the Terriers were second in a time of 6:12.7. BU overcame the Big Green and Badgers in the 2V8 in 5:57.2. A tight 3v8 race had Dartmouth take first by four-tenths over the Terriers at 6:04.0. The Big Green won the final two races of the day in the 4V8 and V4, the latter by less than a couple of seats at 6:49.3.
The Terriers will return to action at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday (May 19) on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
