WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The second day of the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta concluded on Saturday (June 1) at Mercer Lake, with the No. 11 Boston University men's rowing team sending its three eights to the Petite Finals and the Varsity 4 finishing its IRA tenure 16th in the nation.
Both the Terrier Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 were fifth in their semifinal races, while the Third Varsity 8 was fourth.
Calm waters greeted rowers early in the morning as temperatures steadily rose into the 60s. The winds were negligible, with very few clouds in the sky.
BU's Varsity 8, coxed by

Ali El Sayed, started the day in the A/B Semifinal. Holding the line with the other crews in a packed first 500 meters, the Terriers battled Ivy League foes Brown and Dartmouth for fourth. The Bears pulled away after the midway point and Dartmouth gained a few seats in the third quarter, but a sharp push from BU in the final leg guided it to a fifth-place result in 5:38.265, about 1.6 seconds ahead of the Big Green.

Bowen de Gouw, engaged in a tight race with California, Dartmouth, and Yale as Washington pulled away in the A/B Semifinal. BU was in range of a few seats on the Bulldogs for most of the final 1,000 meters, and went on to place fifth with a time of 5:45.894, nearly nine seconds ahead of sixth-place Penn.
In the Third Varsity 8 A/B Semifinal race, the BU crew, coxed by
Peter Adams and stroked by
Dylan Fagiani, jockeyed with Harvard for a Grand Final. Qualifying spot in the first half of the course. Though the Crimson took the lead for good, the Terriers fended off a push from Northeastern to earn fourth in 5:54.040, over two seconds ahead of the Huskies and eight seconds over Penn in sixth place.
BU's Varsity 4, coxed by
Hannah Noguchi and stroked by
Filippo de Marsanich, competed in the C Final. Occupying Lane 4, the Terriers were third after 1,000 meters while on the heels of Penn and Stetson. Going stroke for stroke with Saint Joseph's in Lane 1, a push form the Hawks at the midpoint created a tight finish at the end, and BU settled into fourth place at 6:36.539, less than nine-tenths behind Saint Joseph's and over two seconds ahead of Hobart.
As a result, all three crews can finish as high as seventh in the country pending the outcomes of the Petite Finals. The Third Varsity 8 opens Sunday (June 2) at 9:30 a.m. BU's Second Varsity 8 competes at 10 a.m., with the Varsity 8 hitting the course at 10:50 a.m.
