WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Three top-four finishes in the Petite Finals wrapped up the 11th-ranked Boston University men's rowing team's tenure at the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday (June 2) on Mercer Lake.
As a result, BU finished 10th in the Ten Eyck Team Standings for the third consecutive year. The Terriers were five points behind Penn, and nine points ahead of crosstown rival Northeastern. Washington captured the national championship.
Overall, following the Varsity 4's 15th-place overall finish on Saturday (June 1), the Terrier Third Varsity 8 was ninth overall after a third-place result in the Petite Final. Both the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 were fourth in the B Final, leading to a final ranking of 10th in the nation.
Though more clouds decorated the sky on Sunday compared to the first two days, temperatures remained in the 70s as humidity rolled in throughout the morning. Waters remained flat, with very little wind gusts during the races.
BU's Third Varsity 8, coxed by
Peter Adams and stroked by
Dylan Fagiani, ignited Sunday's action in a packed Petite Final. As leaders Yale and Syracuse pulled away after a tight first 500 meters, the Terriers engaged in close racing with Cornell and Northeastern. BU built nearly a length lead with 500 meters to go and fended off the Big Red to place third in 5:53.922, three second ahead of Cornell.
In the Second Varsity 8 Petite Final, the Terriers, coxed by
James Smith and stroked by
Bowen de Gouw, accelerated out of the blocks to hold the line with Syracuse and Yale. The Orange made their move halfway through, leaving BU to battle with Penn. The Quakers' final push slotted BU into fourth with a time of 5:45.706, nearly two seats behind Penn and three of second-place Yale.
The final Terrier race featured the Varsity 8, coxed by
Emily Slawin and stroked by
Ali El Sayed. BU increased its race in the middle 1,000 meters to overtake Dartmouth and attempt to chase Northeastern. The Terriers went to place fourth, about three seats ahead of the Big Green, to avenge its previous result against Dartmouth at the Lake Morey Invite back in April.
BU concludes the 2024 spring season and will graduate 13 student-athletes before returning in the fall.
