Terriers Extend Home Win Streak With 63-58 Victory Over Lehigh

BOSTON – Extending their home win streak to five games, the Boston University men's basketball team posted a 63-58 victory against Lehigh Wednesday evening at Case Gym.

Helped by a 9-4 advantage in made 3-pointers and 9-2 lead in second-chance points, the Terriers improve to 9-9 and 3-2 in Patriot League play, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 6-10 (1-4 PL). Lehigh rallied from an 18-point first half deficit to grab a 50-48 lead at 4:40 in the second half, but BU was able to clamp down defensively and score nine of the game's final 12 points for the victory.

Sophomore Kyrone Alexander shot 4-of-7 from behind the arc to lead the way with a team-high 18 points and game-high six rebounds. Classmate Michael McNair added a pair of 3-pointers en route to 15 points, and graduate student Miles Brewster finished in double figures too with 11. Senior Malcolm Chimezie hauled in six boards as well to help BU win the rebounding battle, 35-24, and junior Ben Roy dished out a game-high four assists.

Tyler Whitney-Sidney was one of three Mountain Hawks to post a double-digit scoring performance with 20 points, while Nasir Whitlock and Edouard Benoit came off the bench to tally 10 points apiece. Lehigh outscored BU in the paint (32-24) and off turnovers (16-9) but was limited to 4-of-23 (.174) shooting in 3-point territory for the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brewster began the game with a steal and fastbreak layup to help the Terriers jump out with a 10-2 run capped by McNair's own steal and layup at 15:03.
  • After Whitlock cut BU's lead to 19-8 with 8:39 remaining in the half, Roy fed Alexander for a 3-pointer and followed with a turnaround jumper as part of an 7-0 spurt to pull ahead, 26-8, at 6:16.
  • The Mountain Hawks responded with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to 26-16, but Alexander scored seven of the Terriers' final nine points to enter the locker room ahead, 33-20.
  • In the second half, BU and Lehigh went back-and-forth over the first five minutes with Chimezie hitting a layup at 14:17 for a 42-29 lead.
  • Over the next eight minutes, the Mountain Hawks went on a 21-6 run by forcing the Terriers into six turnovers and driving to the hoop.
  • After the teams traded multiple blows, McNair tied the game, 55-55, on a free throw at 3:01, and Alexander followed with the go-ahead 3-pointer set up by Brewster with 1:28 remaining.
  • Brewster then hauled in a defensive rebound and scored on a successful drive to the hoop at 41 seconds for the 60-55 advantage.
  • The Mountain Hawks followed a McNair free throw with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 61-58 with 18 seconds left, but Brewster was able to seal the win by hitting two free throws two seconds later.
