Terriers Retain Lusins Cup to Highlight Lake Morey Invite

April 27, 2025

FAIRLEE, Vt. – The Boston University men's rowing program wrapped up its time at the annual Lake Morey Invite with a win over Columbia to retain the Lusins Cup as part of the weekend festivities at Lake Morey from April 26-27.

The Terriers sent out four crews to race five programs that feature top-20 Varsity 8+ crews: Wisconsin, Columbia, Georgetown, Dartmouth and Syracuse.

Saturday's conditions featured flat water despite rain in the morning sessions and a slight headwind of three miles per hour building to the afternoon session. On Sunday, gusts shifted to an increasing tailwind of about eight miles per hour that was notable for the Third and Fourth Varsity 8+ races.

BU's Varsity 8+, coxed by Emily Slawin and stroked by Hurst Thompson, competed in three cup races over the weekend. On Saturday, the Terriers were bested by Wisconsin for the Jablonic Cup, giving the Badgers their first win in the series since 2021. BU responded with a victory over Columbia in the reignited Lusins Cup with a time of 5:47.3, over seven seconds in front of the Lions. BU has won 10 straight Lusins Cups dating back to 2011. The Terriers matched that time on Sunday against Syracuse, but the Orange won in 5:44.4 to retain the Conlan Cup.

The Terrier Second Varsity 8+, coxed by James Smith and stroked by Jan Koska, picked up two wins over the weekend. BU battled Wisconsin on Saturday in a close race throughout the 2,000-meter course and won with a time of 5:54.3, just 1.7 seconds in front of the Badgers. That afternoon, the Terriers crossed the line first in 5:54.5 to defeat Columbia by nearly 13 seconds. BU's top time of the weekend was 5:52.6 against Syracuse, who won in 5:47.1.

BU's Third Varsity 8+, coxed by Hannah Noguchi and stroked by George Kreidler, started its weekend with sizable wins over Wisconsin and Georgetown with a time of 5:57.6, nearly five seconds in front of the runner-up Badgers. The Terriers once again bested the Hoyas in the afternoon race while coming in second to Syracuse in 5:55 flat. In the rematch against the Orange on Sunday, BU settled for second in a time of 5:52.4, its fastest performance of the weekend.

BU's Fourth Varsity 8+, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by Nixon Murray, dueled Dartmouth's Fifth Varsity 8+ to a photo finish on Saturday morning, with the Terriers narrowly falling short by 0.5 seconds in 6:06.2. The crew then came in second against the 4V squads for Dartmouth (6:04.1) on Saturday afternoon and Syracuse (6:02.6) on Sunday morning.

The Terriers now turn their attention to the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 18 at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
