Terriers Post Four Top 10 Finishes at Eastern Sprints
May 18, 2025 | Men's Rowing
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Boston University men's rowing program concluded the penultimate regatta in its 2025 spring slate with four top-10 results at the 71st edition of the Eastern Sprints on Sunday afternoon at Lake Quinsigamond.
All four Terrier crews advanced to their respective Petite Finals. The Fourth and Third Varsity 8+ crews placed eighth overall with second-place results in the last races. The Second Varsity 8+ was third in the Petite Final and ninth overall. The Varsity 8+ rounded out the day with a 10th place overall finish, good for fourth in the Petite Final.
BU's Fourth Varsity 8+, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by Sam Speed, ignited the regatta at 8 a.m. in a seven-boat matchup for the first heat. The Terriers pulled away from Cornell and locked into a battle with Brown, though the Bears snagged the final spot for the Grand Final as BU clocked in at 6:06.218. In the Petite Final, BU shaved off nearly four seconds with a 6:02.852, second only to Princeton by nearly three seconds and fending off Navy's boat by 1.75 seconds.
The Terrier Third Varsity 8+, coxed by Hannah Noguchi and stroked by Wynant Hubbard, was next in the third heat and placed third out of four Ivy League crews in a time of 5:55.400. The Petite Final saw BU earn revenge over Brown with a time of 5:55.603 that was nearly two seconds in front of the Bears' crew and second only to Syracuse in a six-crew race.
The Varsity 8+, coxed by Emily Slawin and stroked by George Kreidler, competed in the final heat and was sent to the Petite Final after a 5:52.510 performance that trailed Dartmouth, Brown and Wisconsin. The Terriers followed that up with the largest improvement from the heats to the finals for a BU crew at the regatta, completing the course in 5:45.243 to defeat Cornell and Georgetown while narrowly trailing Wisconsin.
BU's Second Varsity 8+, coxed by James Smith and stroked by Ali El Sayed, rounded out the morning heats by fending off Cornell for a third-place result in 6:00.233, advancing to the Petite Final. In that final race, Brown and Northeastern snagged the top two spots, leaving third place up for grabs between the Terriers and Wisconsin. BU prevailed over the Badgers with a nearly two-second margin in a time of 5:53.111.
The Terriers will honor its senior class that missed the commencement exercises over the weekend with a convocation ceremony on the morning of Monday, May 19. After that, BU prepares for the IRA National Championship Regatta at the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. from May 30 to June 1.
