BOSTON – Seven student-athletes have been selected to Boston University's Scarlet Key Class of 2027 in honor of their service and leadership within the BU community.Â
The Scarlet Key Award, one of BU's highest academic honors, acknowledges the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.Â
Kyomi Apalit (softball), Maggie Driscoll (field hockey), Mick Frechette (men's ice hockey), Ethan Huynh (men's swimming), Spencer Joyner (men's basketball), Bella McLaughlin (women's basketball) and Lucy Schwartz (women's rowing) were honored in a tapping ceremony during Alumni Weekend and will officially receive the prestigious award in May.
The athletics department was well-represented in this year's class with seven of the 22 recipients across campus.
Apalit (Martinez, Calif.) played a significant role on the 2026 softball team that earned its fourth consecutive Patriot League title, earning her first appearance on the All-Patriot League Second Team after batting .343 with 41 runs scored and 46 RBI. The senior infielder excelled on the field and in the classroom, earning her third consecutive Patriot League Academic Honor Roll nod while being named an NFCA Scholar-Athlete at the end of the season. As a student in the School of Hospitality Administration, Apalit has earned Dean's List recognition as well as induction into the Eta Sigma Delta International Hospitality Honor Society while earning valuable internship experience with Northwestern Mutual. Serving as the president of the Student-Athletes of Color organization, Apalit mentors younger student-athletes and helps foster an environment that ensures opinions are valued, respected and empowered. As an active member of her community, Apalit participates in student-athlete leadership opportunities and community engagement initiatives, such as volunteering for holiday reading with Boston Public Schools.
A co-captain on this year's field hockey team, Driscoll (Watertown, Mass.) helped the Terriers win the 2025 Patriot League title, starting every game during the season and ranking fourth on the team in points with eight (2g, 4a) while earning a team-best five defensive saves. As SAAC's Community Service Liaison, Driscoll has taken on a visible leadership role connecting the athletic community to service. She mentors first-year student-athletes through Terriers Together, is part of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy, and volunteers at the Student-Athlete Fueling Station. She is also involved in newly relaunched Scarlet Series, an initiative aimed at increasing student-athlete support at sporting events and community service. In addition to the on-campus activities she is involved with, Driscoll also coaches youth field hockey in an effort to help grow the sport and provide access to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity.Â
Frechette (Weston, Mass.), recently named an assistant captain for the Terriers, has been an outstanding leader during his three seasons at BU. He has spearheaded a partnership between BU Hockey and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, Charlestown, and East Boston, organizing sessions where student-athletes teach young children how to skate, followed by time together over pizza and informal conversation. Frechette is also engaged in meaningful service with Team IMPACT and the East Coast Jumbos. On the ice, Frechette has totaled one goal and four assists for five points in 65 games on the BU blue line. A student in the Questrom School of Business, Frechette is also a three-time member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
Huynh (Naperville, Ill.) earned a captain role on the swimming & diving team this season after immersing himself in all aspects of the campus community over his first three years while developing as a mentor and a leader. As a junior, he was part of a school record as the breaststroke leg in the 200-yard medley relay at the Terrier Invite. His personal best in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.83) ranks fifth all-time at BU. Among the roles that Huynh has taken on outside the pool for professional development pursuits are undergraduate researcher, a learning assistant and tutor, a peer mentor in his major, and a mentor in the Terriers Together mentor program within the athletics department. He is also a member of the Sargent College Honors Society, the First-Generation Honors Society, the Pre-Dental Society, and the Oral Health Advocacy Club.
Joyner (Hackensack, N.J.)Â has served multiple roles for the men's basketball team over his four years on Comm. Ave. After his sophomore season ended after just six games due to injury, Joyner transitioned to a head manager role, where he has put his leadership and selflessness to use. He has been an active member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy, serves in a leadership role with BU Bounce Back and has supported department initiatives such as the holiday reading program, Team IMPACT partnership and cancer awareness programs. Outside of BU, Joyner has also conducted clinics at the Dorchester Boys & Girls Club and at home in Hackensack, volunteered as an assistant coach for his local girls' basketball team.
Â
McLaughlin (Hamden, Maine), a two-year captain for the women's basketball team, was the team's third leading scorer last season and ranked in the top five in the Patriot League in assists. Along with participating in community service alongside her team, McLaughlin has also volunteered on campus for organizations such as the National Marrow Donor Registry program, Cradles to Crayons, Boston Public Schools and Boston Centers for Youth and Families. McLaughlin is a member of several on-campus organizations and currently serves as an executive board member of BU's chapter of Morgan's Message, where she organizes mental health advocacy events and initiatives, and as a PASS Coach at the BU Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, where she works one on one with peers who have mental health conditions. Her leadership is displayed in several ways, including in her role as the Vice President of Athlete Ally, where she creates initiatives and activities that help foster a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community.Â
A senior on the women's rowing team, Schwartz (Lancaster, Pa.) is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient and is a leader both in and out of the boat. Pursuing a bachelor's degree in neuroscience with a minor in public health, she is heavily involved in neuroscience and biomedical research. Schwartz participated in the Summer in Neuroscience Program (SPIN) and conducted research at the Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research. While there, she earned both NIH-supported funding and an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program award. She is very involved in the BU and greater Boston community, serving as co-chair of Chapter Operations for the Heart and Mind Foundation and volunteering at the Haley House Soup Kitchen. Schwartz participated in the BU UNICEF Club and serves as an Emergency Medical Technician with Boston University EMS.
