high jump champion. While at Boston University's School of
Education, he excelled in both the classroom and on the track.
In the latter, he won numerous championships in the long jump
and contributed greatly in the high jump, sprints, and relays,
helping the Terriers to two straight New England championships.
The team captain of both indoor and outdoor teams his senior
year, Dr. Bruce became the first Boston University athlete
to win an IC4A title. Competing in the broad jump, the Roxbury
native won the indoor IC4A title in 1954 and 1955. He finished
second in the outdoor IC4A both years. His indoor leap in
1955 placed him in the top ten in the world.
Upon graduating with honors from Boston University, he enlisted
in the Marine Corps. Following his tour of duty, Dr. Bruce
earned his Masters Degree in 1961 from his alma mater and
went on to Harvard where he received a doctorate in 1972.
He became an Associate Dean of Brown University's Graduate
School.
