Throughout the summer of 2020, BU Athletics held virtual, department-wide conversations for student-athletes, coaches and staff to share emotions, thoughts and support amidst the civil and social unrest present the country faced and continues to face. These conversations later led to greater efforts put forth by the department and its varsity programs.

Hispanic Heritage Month |

BU Athletics celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept to Oct. 2020 by featuring student-athletes who are proud to identify as Hispanic, sharing their heritage and culture with the rest of Terrier Nation. National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the people, their ancestors, cultures and powerful impact they've made in the U.S.

In the fall of 2020, the BU Athletics community spearheaded a non-partisan effort to empower teams and the community to participate in the 2020 Census and Presidential Election. Learn more.

Terriers Stand For |
|
"Terriers Stand For" is a campaign created by the Social Justice & Inclusion Committee, which invites student-athletes to share what core area they support. Responses included justice, education reform, equality, and black lives matter.

Pride Week |
| BU Athletics' annual Pride Week Celebration supporting the LBGTQIA+ community was held January 31 through February 6, 2021, with various panels and events hosted via Zoom by Athlete Ally, the Athletics student-led organization that fosters an inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ student-athletes and allies. Among the events was a virtual conversation between Athlete Ally and BU Student-Athletes of Color (SAOC) about intersectionality. BU Today Close-Up | BU Athletics Recap |
Patriot League Pursuit of Antiracism Games |
| In February 2021, the Patriot League reaffirmed its commitment toward the pursuit of antiracism, symbolized by warm-up shirts worn by men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes around the league. The warm-up shirt was adorned by a black fist surrounded by 10 stars to represent each of the league’s member institutions, along with the phrase “pursuing anti-racism” and " Unity, Respect, Activism." The design was developed based on widespread support from the league’s men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes, coaches and administrators as a symbol of their dedication to supporting black and brown communities through unity, respect and activism.

Black National Anthem |
|
BU basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and track & field played "Lift Every Voice and Sing" prior to home games during Black History Month as a way to honor one of the pillars of Black culture and life. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is also known as the Black National Anthem.

Let's Chat with SAOC |

In celebration of Black History Month, “Let’s Chat” with BU Student-Athletes of Color (SAOC) was hosted throughout February. Each week, SAOC welcomed student-athletes from various teams to chat about race, reflection, education and more, in hopes of creating a space for dialogue and learning across our community.
