Alex Perkins returns to coach Bohrer's coaching staff for his fifth season in 2020-21 after helping guide the Terriers to an eighth-place team finish at the 2019 IRA Regatta. 

During the 2019-20 fall season, Perkins' fourth at BU, he helped coach the Terriers to four top 10 finishes among US colleges at the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta. 

During the 2018-19 season, Perkins’s third at BU, the Terriers pushed all four boats through to the IRA semifinals for the sixth consecutive year and the  2V8 and V4 finished first petite finals to finish seventh overall.

At the 2018 Head of the Charles the team had its deepest team performance in the Championship Eights event. Racing two Championships Eights which placed 7th and 9th collegiately in the elite field.

During the 2017-18 season, Perkins’s second at BU, the Terriers pushed all four boats through to the IRA A/B semifinals for the fifth consecutive year. Advancing the 3V8 and V4 boats to the grand final and finished with 131 Ten Eyck points, good for eighth place nationally. In the fall season Perkins coached the BU Championship Men’s four at the 2017 Head of the Charles to a program best in a championship level boat class with a second-place finish.
 
During the 2016-17 season, the Terriers finished in sixth place in the IRA standings, matching the 2014 team best finish, as well as placing fourth in the Row Cup standings at Eastern Sprints. During the ’17 season Perkins lead BU to the team’s first Henley appearance in over 20 years.  Including coaching the Visitors Challenge Cup -4 to a win over rival Cornell before falling to the eventual winners of the event by a length.

During the 2017 dual season Perkins first at BU, the Terriers defeated Brown in the annual Michalson Cup race and with the win, were in possession of all six of their annual cups for the first time in program history as they won their final five cup races of the 2016 season. Later in 2017, BU also defeated archrival Northeastern by open water to win the Arlett Cup for the third straight year. Perkins coached the 3V eight to an undefeated regular season claiming wins over Brown, Northeastern, Dartmouth, Syracuse, and Wisconsin.  At the ’17 Eastern Sprints Regatta BU placed 4th in the Varsity eights after a photo finish with Princeton coming up inches short of a bronze medal. The 2V eight came away with a Bronze medal.  This fourth-place finish was a team best for the Varsity 8.
 
A four-time IRA National Championship Team member, Perkins was named an assistant coach of the Boston University men's rowing team in July, 2016. Perkins is a 2015 graduate of the University of Washington where he was a member of the Huskies' 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 division I National Championship teams.

The Westport, Conn. native works closely with head coach Tom Bohrer and associate head coach John Lindberg in the training of all team athletes and also assists in the team's recruiting efforts and day-to-day operations of the team.
 
During his collegiate career at Washington, Perkins sat in the stroke seat for the Huskies' varsity eight boat that won the grand final at the IRAs in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons and was also a four-time Henley Royal Regatta Finalist.
