Stephen Andersen has been promoted to associate head coach of the Boston University swimming & diving programs ahead of the 2026-27 season, which will be his fifth year on staff.
Andersen has a proven track record of developing high-performing swimmers at all levels. He works primarily with the Terriers' distance and individual medley athletes while contributing to all aspects of the program, including recruiting, athlete development and team operations.
Andersen was elevated to full-time assistant coach in 2023 after James Sica was named head coach as Andersen spent the 2022-23 season as a volunteer assistant. He has headed up the program's recruiting efforts since the 2024 and the women's class for 2025 was ranked ninth in the country among mid-majors. Fifteen school records have been broken a combined 26 times since Andersen came to BU with 102 program top-10 times having been posted in that span.
Andersen has built a reputation for helping swimmers maximize their potential through individualized training, technical refinement and race strategy. His coaching philosophy emphasizes accountability and consistency, while fostering an environment that supports both athletic and academic achievement. Andersen was selected as a coach for the United States at the FISU America Games in Cali Colombia in 2024 and helped guide two BU swimmers to multiple podium finishes at the event.
Prior to Boston University, Andersen coached with Commonwealth Swimming, where he helped guide athletes to represent the United States at Junior World Championships, Junior Pan Pacific championships as well as five separate athletes reach the U.S. Olympic Trials. As a coach for Commonwealth Swimming, Andersen was able to travel to the United States OTC to attend the USA Swimming Girls National Select Camp, designed for the top USA Swimming member athletes in the nation. He was also awarded a 30 Under 30 grant to attend the American Swim Coaches Association World Clinic in 2023 as one of the top young coaches in the nation.
Before starting his coaching career, Andersen worked at Citizens Financial Group as a portfolio manager in its corporate banking department. He graduated from Saint Michael’s College in 2017 with a BA in economics.
