July 22, 2016 | General, Women's Tennis
This summer, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 7 in this year's Terrier Twelve is the women's tennis team three-peating as the Patriot League champions and sweeping all five of the conference's major awards.
Led by three-time PL Coach of the Year Lesley Sheehan and three-time PL Player of the Year Johanna Hyoty, BU secured its 16th NCAA berth and trip to No. 16 national-seed Texas Tech by capturing three wins by a combined score of 13-1, highlighted by a 4-1 victory over tournament host Navy.
Freshman and 2016 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Sabrina Faybyshev was named the tournament MVP after posting a perfect 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles. She teamed with Hyoty for a 9-4 overall record at No. 1 doubles, which included a 6-0 mark in League action and an upset victory over Dartmouth's No. 7-nationally ranked duo, to earn her first and Hyoty's second PL Doubles Team of the Year award.
Posting a 9-5 record in the top singles slot, Hyoty graduated BU with an incredible awards haul. Besides her two major conference doubles awards, she was the first in PL history to receive three-straight Player of the Year honors while also claiming two PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. Furthermore, both she and four-time All-Conference First Team honoree Lauren Davis were named to the PL 25th Anniversary Team prior to the start of the 2015-16 season.
Davis and Hyoty eclipsed the 100-win milestones in their final season, while fellow senior Kim McCallum reached 80 career wins to leave her mark on the program. Despite their departures due to graduation, BU will return four experienced Terriers who started in the PL title win and NCAA match with Faybyshev, rising junior and 2015 PL tournament MVP Iryna Kostirko, rising senior and two-time All-PL honoree Barbara Rodriguez and rising sophomore Remi Ramos all coming back in the fall.
